Recommendation for field with large amount of records

I'm creating an app for a client that will act as a whiteboard for managing rooms in their hospice. When updating a room they will need to select from a large list of patients (several thousand) stored in a SQL Azure database. I'm trying to figure out what would be the best field type to use so they can quickly search for a patient and assign them to the room. Would a combobox work best?

Combobox will show upto the delegation limit of 2k records

Better bet will be to create a gallery showcasing all the items and add a search box on the top for user to filter the gallery and select an item

It will be important to understand delegation to work with large data sets and make your App performant

Thanks for the reply! It's a relational database so I need to get the PatientID into the corresponding field in the Rooms table. Would you recommend having a Gallery sitting beside the edit form that includes the Room info and, when a patient is selected from the Gallery, have it populate the field in the Room form? If so, any tips on how to do that?
