Recording values in a collection => argument does not match the expected type

Dear community,

I am facing a problem when adding records to a empty collection. I believe the problem is easy to solve, but I am not being able to figure it out alone.

I first created an empty collection with:

ClearCollect(collectionInspection, {
Type: Blank(),
Checkpoint: Blank(),
Spec_Point: Blank(),
Picture: Blank(),
Category: Blank(),
Text_1: Blank(),
Text_2: Blank()

The collection has not a single record (empty). Now I would like to populate it by certain means when some buttons are clicked. I did for the first button:

Patch(collectionInspection, Defaults(collectionInspection),
{ Type: "redTag" },
{ Checkpoint: varSelectedCheckpoint }

But even before continuing updating other properties, Power Apps throws an error.

It says "The type of this argument 'Type' does not match the expected type 'ObjNull'. Found type 'Text'".

Clearly PowerApps does not agree with me inserting a string as Type.

How can I make this work? Thanks a lot in advance!!

@LeoGS Patch can be use to either Add a new record using Defaults or modify an existing record. Collect only adds a new record to the collection.

Try this,

Collect(collectionInspection, {Type: "redTag", Checkpoint: varSelectedCheckpoint})

@LeoGS First the ClearCollect is adding 1 record and then the Patch is adding another record. So you'll end up with one extra blank record. If you want a clear collection, you could just say,

Then do your patch and I think your error will disappear.

Hi @CNT ,

Thanks a lot for your response.

No, my intention is not to clear the collection. I would like to:
1- Create a empty collection when the user leaves the Home Screen. This Collection should have 7 predefinied column fields.

2- Add records to this collection "on the fly" i.e. while the user uses the app, in different screens via different buttons.

Do you have another clue?

Ok. It looks like it works if I substitute "Patch" for "Collect". But now I am really confused about the differences of these two functions.....

@LeoGS Patch can be use to either Add a new record using Defaults or modify an existing record. Collect only adds a new record to the collection.

Try this,

Collect(collectionInspection, {Type: "redTag", Checkpoint: varSelectedCheckpoint})

Thanks CNT. I figured it out by my own. I still don't really get the differences between Collect and Patch (or more specific, when to use PATCH in a collection), but it is fine. It works!

@LeoGS Glad to help!

Collect builds a table in the memory of the App. It is transients. Everytime you use Collect(collectionname, {fields}) your are adding a new record to that collection.

Patch interacts with that table. If you want to change the value of a particular filed of a particular record in that collection, you can use Patch. Futhermore, Patch works on any datasource (Sharepoint List, Dataverse table etc.,) not just on a collection.

For example,

I am creating a collection called Ice Cream with 2 columns (Flavour and Colour) and 2 records.

ClearCollect(IceCream, {Flavour: "Vanilla", Colour: "White"},{Flavour:"Pista", Colour:"Green"})

If I want to add one more record, so I'll use Patch,

Patch(IceCream, Defaluts('IceCream'),  {Flavour: "Pineapple", Colour: "Yellow"}

If I want to change the value of Colour for the "Pineapple" flavour using Patch,

Patch(IceCream, Flavour= "Pineapple", Colour: "Orange"}

I hope this gets you started!

Please remember to give a 👍 and accept the solution as it will help others in the future.

Thanks @CNT ,

I believe my confusion comes from that:

"If I want to add one more record, so I'll use Patch"

In the end, I though that creating a table with empty values would still allow me to "add more records" to it using Patch. I was doing like this to pre-define how the columns of the table will be named. But in the end, by doing it with Collect, I will reach the same effect. It is fine!

@LeoGS Adding new records to a collection can be achieved by Collect as well as Patch. But as I had mentioned, Patch can do that for any datasource and not just for a Collection. That's the difference.

Have a great day!
