SQL data filter formatting

Hello,

I have a powerapp with a gallery connected to a on prem SQL DB.  I am trying to search the table by matching either the 'Name' or 'Int1' column.  The filter on the Items property has two issues.

First, when entering a name, any spaces will clear the search.  EX. the names in the table are formatted as Lastname, Firstname and a search containing 'Firstname Lastname' will not return results as soon as it picks up the space in the search box.

Second, I am getting a delegation warning when filtering results from the SQL table.

Here is my formula.

Filter('[Access].[Personnel]',TextInput1.Text in Text(Name) Or TextInput1.Text in Text(Int1))

Thanks for the help!

Hi @Kthomas ,

1)blank spaces

Could you describe more clearly what kind of text do you want to filter column like "Lastname, Firstname"

                                                                                                              ("lastname"   +   ","    +   "space"   +   "firstname") based on?

I used to mean that use data like "Firstname Lastname"  to filter. ("firstname"   +   "space"  +    "lastname" )

If you want to totally neglect blank spaces and "," in the column data, you could totally replace them as "".

Try this:

Filter('[Access].[Personnel]', TextInput1.Text in Substitute(Name,", ","")||TextInput1.Text in Text(Int1))
//replace ", " with ""

2)delegation

The syntax of clearcollect should be like:

ClearCollect(collectionname,sqltablename)

You need to connect your app with sql table firstly. Then at the app''s onstart to save sqltable data to a collection.

Then use this collection as data source later.

For example, the filter that you want:

Filter(collectionname, TextInput1.Text in Substitute(Name,", ","")||TextInput1.Text in Text(Int1))

 Please notice that powerapps not supports all the data type of sqltable. The not supported data type will display as blank value in collection.

I've made a similar test:

ClearCollect(a,'[dbo].[food_info]')

my collection looks like this:
4161.PNG

 Please notice that, in this page, collection will only show the first five records, not all records.

That does not mean that this collection only has 5 records. You could view others in controls, like gallery, listbox, ect.

Here's a table about supported data type of sql:

Power Apps data type mappings

TABLE 4
SQL Server Power Apps
bigint, decimal, int, money, numeric, smallint, smallmoney, tinyint, float, real Number
char, nchar, varchar, nvarchar, text, ntext Text
bit Boolean
date, datetime/datetime2/smalldatetime, datetimeoffset, time DateTime
uniqueidentifier Guid

 Note

If a SQL Server data type is not listed in the table above, it is not supported. Examples of unsupported SQL Server data types include: binary(), varbinary(), image, cursor, rowversion, hierarchyid, sql_variant xml, Spatial Geometry Types, Spatial Geography Types, and table.

Use the Search function instead. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powerapps/maker/canvas-apps/functions/function-filter-lookup

I haven't explored this with SQL as a connection, but no reason to expect it won't work as intended. It allows full text searching of multiple columns, and is typically delegable.

Hi @Kthomas ,

1)Do you want to filter column like "Lastname, Firstname" by text like "Firstname Lastname"?

If so, the reason why you not filter successfully is because of "," in the data source.

Try this formula:

Filter('[Access].[Personnel]', TextInput1.Text in Substitute(Name,",","")||TextInput1.Text in Text(Int1))

 Substitute could remove "," in the original data.

2)The delegation warning:

This is powerapps limit. PowerApps could only deal with at most 2000 records in local. If your data is larger than 2000, you need to use delegate data source and delegate functions to delegate data source to deal with data.

The reason why you have this warning is that you use delegate data source but not delegate functions.

How to remove this?

1/If your data source is smaller than 2000 records, you just need to change the delegate limit to 2000. This warning will not make your app not perform bad.

delegation.jpg

 2/ If your data source is larger than 2000, since the functions that you need in your formula can not be replaced by any other delegate functions, I suggest you save data in collection, then use the collection as the data source.

In collection, there's no delegation limit.

For example: set the app's OnStart:

ClearCollect(collection1,'[Access].[Personnel]')

set the gallery's Items:

Filter(collection1, TextInput1.Text in Substitute(Name,",","")||TextInput1.Text in Text(Int1))

Here's docs about your issue:
1)
Substitute function

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powerapps/maker/canvas-apps/functions/function-replace-substitute

2)delegation :

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powerapps/maker/canvas-apps/delegation-overview

3)delegate functions in sql:

I suggest as follows:

1. use the suggestion from @v-yutliu-msft

You can also try after considering my points in Notes 2.:

  Search('[Access].[Personnel]',TextInput1.Text,"Name","Int")

2. Note: Based on the picture on delegation below, the INT field if it is a number field may not be delegable hence the delegation warning.

If you insist on searching on the INT the create the column or another column as nvarchar and use that in the search.

Thank you for that explanation, I was stuck trying to figure out why the search function would not search a number.  Without being able to manipulate the table, I'll need to use the filter function.

@v-yutliu-msft

I tried inserting the formula you suggested, however spaces still mess up the search.  Unfortunately I cannot change the data as this is reading a SQL table for another service.

The Table certainly has more than 2000 rows so I am working on collecting the items as you suggested.

For further clarification, I am looking for the most forgiving search possible.  End users will enter in the information for lookup and may not format correctly.

@v-yutliu-msft

I tried using the collect funtion on app start, however I am getting no data returned in the collection.  The tables headers are there but no items.  Any Suggestions?
