Selected Gallery Item on master record not staying selected after patching details

I have a screen that has a Gallery showing random pieces of information from a SharePoint list.  On each of those record templates, I have an icon that when clicked, sets a variable to the Gallery item's Project Number, and navigates to a details screen.  Normally, when I click on the icon, everything on the detail screen loads correctly, and I can update my data.  As soon as I hit the save button on the details screen (which runs a simple patch command that saves the updates from the 4 forms associated to that record):

Patch('SharePoint List',
LookUp('SharePoint List',ProjectID=varThisProject),
frmDetails.Updates,
frmContacts.Updates,
frmDates.Updates,
frmAttachments.Updates)

  The problem is that after I save, the information on the 4 forms gets replaced by the information from the record of the very first entry put into the list.  It kind of seems like the previously clicked icon from the correct record is no longer selected so the forms just show the very first record instead.

Is there a way to make sure that the Gallery's .Selected record stays selected?   It does the same thing if I explicitly select the record prior to hitting the icon.

@zuurg

First, as you are trying to split a form into multiple forms - using a Patch function on the forms like that completely breaks the functionality and features of the form - which are quite powerful in PowerApps!

If you want to learn how to split a form properly, please take a look at this video on doing it without breaking your form features.

Next, this is all about your items property of the Gallery!  If you have a formula in it that need to be re-evaluated, then PowerApps will do so.  What would cause re-evaluation?  If you have any sorting or data shaping functions in your Items property, then once you alter the Datasource, PowerApps knows that it needs to re-evaluate the formula.  When it does, it essentially "resets" itself.  And, as such, it looks to the Default property of the Gallery to determine what record to have selected. If your Default property is empty, then it will select nothing - i.e. the first record!

To resolve it, look to your Default property and supply it with the record you had previously selected.

Now...the following is not a "one size fits all"!  It is completely dependent on the Items property of the gallery, but if it is just that it is sorting, then do the following:

In the OnSelect action formula of the Gallery, set the formula to include: Set(glbCurrentRecord, ThisItem)

Then set your Default on the Gallery to: glbCurrentRecord

If it is more complex of an Items property, then the formula needs to account for the complexity.

I hope this is helpful for you.

Hi @RandyHayes ,

That was very helpful.  Setting that default on the Gallery prevents the child data from reverting back to that first record's information, but now the forms that contain the details show "No item to display" after having saved it.  (the Form's Item property is currently set to galProjectList.Selected).  It also looks like the data is only being saved to the SP List if I explicitly select the record in the Gallery prior to hitting the icon that opens the details screen.

Is there any way to avoid having to select the gallery item first and do I need to change the form's Item property to Lookup('Data Source',ProjectNumber=glbCurrentRecord.ProjectNumber) or is there a more efficient way to do it?

@zuurg

If the gallery is the same data source as the Form, then just set the Item property of the form to: glbCurrentRecord

That will already have the record you want.

Getting closer, it's sort of working now, but it looks like I'm still having to explicitly select the record in the gallery THEN click the icon to get it to edit the correct record (I've cleared the OnSelect property of the Gallery to test and the Icon's OnSelect sets the glbCurrentRecord to ThisItem).
