Setting Variable in OnChange property of DropDown

I was hoping someone could help me or point me in the right direction. I am trying to use a GIF/image to show as loading image when dropdown values reset on my app. I currently have this working in my App OnStart property where I set the variable (varLaoading) to true (shows Image) at start, then the app builds collections, and then I set the variable to false (hide image). The image's Visible property is set to the variable. Where is doesn't work is on the OnChange property of a dropdown. I have 5 cascading dropdowns that are used as filters and when a user changes the value in the top dropdown I reset the other dropdown values to their default. I tried setting this up similar to the App OnStart by placing the set variable function on either side of the reset functions but this does not work for some reason. This does work on the OnSelect property of the dropdown though. Can anyone help me see why the OnChange property of the dropdown will not update the variable. Thanks much, screenshots below.

App OnStart - This works well

Set(varLoading, true);
Concurrent(
ClearCollect(colA,Filter('Published Repository',BatchID=1)),
ClearCollect(colB,Filter('Published Repository',BatchID=2)),
ClearCollect(colC,Filter('Published Repository',BatchID=3)),
ClearCollect(colD,Filter('Published Repository',BatchID=4)));
ClearCollect(ColPB, colA,colB,colC,colD);
ClearCollect(colDept, {Result: "All"},Sort(Distinct(ColPB, 'Department/Function'.Value), Result));
ClearCollect(colDocType, {Result: "All"}, Sort(Distinct(ColPB, 'Document Type'.Value), Result));
ClearCollect(colLVL1, {Result: "All"}, Sort(Distinct(ColPB, 'LVL 1'.Value), Result));
ClearCollect(colLVL2, {Result: "All"}, Sort(Distinct(ColPB, 'LVL 2'.Value), Result));
ClearCollect(colLVL3, {Result: "All"}, Sort(Distinct(ColPB, 'LVL 3'.Value), Result));
Set(varLoading, false);

DropDown On Change Property - Does not work

Set(varLoading, true);Concurrent(Reset(ddDocType),Reset(ddLVL1), Reset(ddLVL2),Reset(ddLVL3));Set(varLoading, false);

Do you get an error or you dont just see the image.
I tried Same for Vraible and UpdateContext and both works: Set(varLoading, true);Concurrent(Reset(ddDocType),Reset(ddLVL1), Reset(ddLVL2),Reset(ddLVL3));Set(varLoading, false)

it works but so fast the image does not show up.

what is your error message

Your screen shot also was not attached.

How long do your resets take to process?

My guess, either it is so quick that you simply do not see the image, or, the reset is triggering a call for data from the datasource and PowerApps is processing the second set statement (making the image invisible) while still running the data call in the background. An indication of this would be the 'activity indicator' (running ants) across the top of the screen showing.

PowerApps sometimes processes subsequent instructions (and taps on controls) while still performing a fetch/post of data.

Thanks for the reply. There is no error it's only that the image doe not show. When I reset/change the top filter (Department/Function), dependent on how many of the other filters are in use the app can take a couple seconds to reset the other filters and can appear frozen. So my hope was to have the loading show so that the user is aware that something is happening. I also set a text value of a label to the variable (varLaoding) and i do not see any change in that as well. Any ideas on how i can get this to work?

Thanks for the reply, it can take a couple seconds, dependent on how many of the other filters have been used. When it does take that long the app appears frozen so I wanted something for the user to know that something is happening. I don't see the ants either when it is resetting the filters. Not sure because I also set the variable to a text value in a label and I don't visually see a change in that either. Maybe it is too fast. Any ideas how i can get that image to show when the user switches the value in the first dropdown?

Please Insert another image and try the variable on it.

Dont use the same image being used by the earlier formula.

Give feedback.

Thanks again, I get the same result with the new image,  it works in the OnStart for the app but not the OnChange of DropDown. I also tried using a new variable as well with same results.

An alternative you may want to consider - instead of showing the 'loading' icon (which is proving problematic) maybe try navigating to another screen which simply says something like 'Loading' or 'Processing'. You can have a timer on that screen with autostart set to true and the duration set to however long your resets typically take. In OnTimerEnd simply set it to go Back().

Experiment with putting the Navigate before or after your reset to determine the best results.

Watch out for any OnVisible actions on you main screen - maybe create a variable so you can toggle off performing those actions when coming back to the screen from your 'Processing' screen.

@Anonymous

I setup my apps pretty much exactly the way @PaulD1 has set-out, although I don't use a timer (not a bad idea though).

I create a blank screen with a free loading gif from loading.io and some text, like below. Then before any code that may take some time I navigate to this screen then Back() at the end of the code sequence. Seems to work ok.

As Paul also mentioned, watch out for OnVisible code when you return. I set a global variable on entering my first screen then OnVisible only runs if that variable matches, then when returning from the loading screen I set it to Blank(). I created a few endless loops when I first ran into this issue, lol.

I did originally build the loading elements as you have done but found I would need to do this for a number of screens. Since then I've decided having just one dedicated screen saves a lot of work!
