Text to text literal?

I'm trying to use a combobox to show a certain column of a certain table based on variables set earlier.

 

Sheet is the name of the columns in a certain table defined as so:

 

Set(sheet, Text(Dropdown1.Selected.Value))

However when trying to use it in this command:

ShowColumns(TableName, sheet)

The error is that there is no text literal. How do i get this command to work, still using these variables?

But then i wouldn't be able to differentiate which column to display surely if they all had the same name?

Hahaha, not all columns in ONE table must have the same header. No I mean, you use several tables. One column in these tables are used for the combo box. In the tables, that column should have the same header.

Oh dear, that was a blonde moment of me!

 

So i've gone through all the tables, renemaed them and then changed the code to fit. The columns are now 1,2,3 etc.

 

Unfortunately this has now taken us backwards as it seems it isn't working at all anymore 😞 I'm getting an error that said column doesn't exist. That is true as i renamed it.. but i also don't call it anywhere as you can see.

Maybe you should replace the space in the column names with _x0020_

Edit: Sorry, I replied to a post on the first screen of the topic.
As I can see, you have already tried this.

Dit you also refresh the connection? And yes, it is true you can also use different column names as you have done as I can see ("1", "2"etc.).

 

What is the exact error message when you hover the mouise  over the red circle?

Yes I refreshed the connections. There are quite a few errors now.

 

1) Table doesn't contain column of text type

     - i've tried renaming the columns to words and the same error still persists

 

2) The specified column "Value1" does not exist.

    - i didn't enter this value, i found it in "Search Items" so it was automatically generated. I am unsure as to what to change it to.image.png

 

 

3) Expected: 'ParenClose', Found: 'Eof'

 

So confused with all this!

Ok. I am going to try to reproduce you situation. Do I understand your situation correctly:

 

1. You have several Excel files right. They are stores in OneDrive.

2. Excel spreadsheet have worksheets where one worksheet has one table.

3. The app has 3 combo boxes: With #1 you select the Excel file. With #2 you select the worksheet (table).. Combo box 3 should show the values in the table (for a certain table)

 

Is this right?

I think a change is needed in the setup. I could reproduce your errors and yes, as a spoiler, we do need to have the same column name for all values.

 

I got the following situation to work:

1. 2 Excel sheets: "Excel One" and "Excel Two".

2. Both files have 2 sheets: "Excel One" > "One" and "Two"; "Excel Two" > "Three" and "Four".

3. Every sheet has one table: "One" > "Table11"; "Two" > "Table12""Three" > "Table21""Four" > "Table22". < I added all 4 tables to the app.

4. I have a "combo box", a "drop down" and a "combo box" < I believe after inspecting your images, this is your setup.

5. The app has one sheet. The property "OnVisible": ClearCollect(dd2, Table({Name: "Excel One", Sheet: "Select a value"}, {Name: "Excel Two", Sheet: "Select a value"},{Name: "Excel One", Sheet: "One"}, {Name: "Excel One", Sheet: "Two"}, {Name: "Excel Two", Sheet: "Three"}, {Name: "Excel Two", Sheet: "Four"}))

6. Combox box 1 > Property "items" > ["Excel One","Excel Two"]

7. Drop down > Property "Items" > ShowColumns(Filter(dd2, Name = ComboBox1.Selected.Value), "Sheet")

8. Drop down > Property "OnChange" > 

Switch(Dropdown2.Selected.Sheet,
    "One", ClearCollect(kit, ShowColumns(Table11, "Column_x0020_A")),
    "Two", ClearCollect(kit, ShowColumns(Table12, "Column_x0020_A")),
    "Three", ClearCollect(kit, ShowColumns(Table21, "Column_x0020_A")),
    "Four", ClearCollect(kit, ShowColumns(Table22, "Column_x0020_A"))
)

9. Combo box 2 > Property "Items" > kit

 

So the biggest changes are:

1. Use one column name for the values ("Column A" in my case).

2. Use a switch on the drop down and not on the second combo box.

Woah Rick this is phenominal thanks so much!

 

I have adapted your solution as to fit what I've got for the first 2 controls (as they were also a feat to get right) and it seems we are inches away from the perfect solution - but woah, this is brilliant :).

 

Mine differs from yours in that in order to show the different items in the second dropbox it finds the sheet names slightly differently (as annoyling named the sheet names are compiled in multiple excel tables as header names). But from what i can see, this shouldn't be the end of the world.

 

At the moment sometimes this works as expected however other times it's showing the options over the dropbox rather confusingly! Any idea as to what this is caused by?comboboxerror.gif

Could you explain to me what goes wrong. From the 'video' I cannot see it clearly. And please also share the property 'Items' for the three controls if you can so I have a better understanding how they are configured.
