Trying to prevent save on empty text box and combobox on SharePoint form

Been trying to resolve this for a couple of days now here is the issue:

I have custom code for a combo box.

when you select "Other" then a text box become visible. Currently if you select "Other" with nothing entered in the Combo Box and or the "Other Text Box" people are able to save the form.

The issue is, I need to prevent both items being blank when people go to save the form.

I'm not sure where to put the code below at to prevent the save if the items are blank

If(IsBlank(txt_Name.Text),"This is a Required Field") &

If(IsBlank(cmb_Name.Text),"This is a Required Field")

this was recommended to try on a prior post, which got abandoned

on #2 the Error Message Label, what is considered the Label?

1. Delete this Data Card and re-add it and see if that resolve the issue. 
2. In the Error Message label put this formula: If(IsBlank(YourInputText.Text),"This is a Required Field")

not sure what to do, as I have the code for the IsBlank almost everywhere in the form, except the right location to prevent a save if the combo box (cmb_Name) and the Text Box (txt_box) are blank.

How do I prevent the form from being saved to the SharePoint list if the fields are Blank?

There are a few ways to go about this.

1 - Utilize the Required property of the datacard.

If this is a required field (in your form), then you can just make sure that the Update property of the datacard is producing the Blank condition.  Then, your Form.Valid will be false and you can leverage that to disable the submit control.

2 - Utilize a notification label in your form.  Place the label in the form and set the Visible property to:

IsBlank(yourCombobox.Selected.<value>) || 
(yourCombobox.Selected.<value> = "Other" && IsBlank(yourOtherInput.Text))

Then you can leverage the .Visible property to disable your submit control 

If(yourLabel.Visible, Disabled, Edit)

Hello Randy:

thanks for the assistance.

currently the field is marked required in the SharePoint list. I do have an Error Message defined.

So here is what is happening:

I can go to the form,  then on the Combo box, if I leave it blank and if I leave the Text Box Blank and then click SharePoint save button (No custom button). the form will save. the list it will say "Required Field".. but remain blank. and all the other data is saved to the list.

Here is the field

Under Advanced Properties:

the error message has this code:
If(IsBlank(txt_Name.Text),"This is a Required Field")

txt_Name  not sure if I need to put the above code somewhere in the properties

I think I need to some how capture this item:

cmb_Name not sure about where to put the code.

I do have a Question, I found this code snippet, not sure if I copied it correctly.  could I put the code below 

in the OnSave for the SharePoint Integration

If(IsBlank(cmb_Name.Text),"This is a Required Field"), SubmitForm(SharePointForm1), false)

I think I need the above to also have the txt_Name in the line of code.

I currently have this:

this above code is not working.

So, how do I prevent the form from saving if the cmb_Name and txt_Name are blank?

I tried this:
If(IsBlank(cmb_Name) && !IsBlank(txt_Name.Text), SubmitForm(SharePointForm1), false)

it would not let me submit the form even if the field(s) was filled it. what did I do wrong?

Your formula: If(IsBlank(cmb_Name) && !IsBlank(txt_Name.Text), SubmitForm(SharePointForm1), false)
Here you can submit the form only your condition is fulfilled, means combo box selection will be empty/none AND txt_Name is not empty. Is that how you want?
If you want combo box will have some selections to submit the form then try this -
If(!IsBlank(cmb_Name) && !IsBlank(txt_Name.Text), SubmitForm(SharePointForm1), false)

I added "!" to make sure cmb_name is not empty

Please accept the solution if it works!

Yes, so this is the value of the Valid property of the form!!

Your "code" snippet that you mentioned is not a good one!  The form provides a Valid property just for validation...use it!

Your formula for the Submit should be this:

SubmitForm(SharePointForm1)

(no need for a "false" in your If statement by the way!)

Since that button will be disabled if the form is not valid (see below) then there is no need to check anything, it is already done.

You are currently trying to use an IsBlank on a Control...that will never be blank!!  Controls are not blank.  You would have needed to look at the value of the property of the control that you want, not the control itself.

However, it is not needed...just refer to the Valid properly of the form.

To set the stage for this, change the following that you have so far:

Set the Text of ErrorMessage17 to: "This is a Required Field"

Then Set the Visible property of ErrorMessage17 to: 

IsBlank(cmb_Name.Selected.<value>) || 
(cmb_Name.Selected.<value> = "Other" && IsBlank(txt_Name.Text))

For the Update property of your Name_DataCard1 datacard, set the property formula to:

If(ErrorMessage17.Visible, 
    Blank(),
    <yourCurrentUpdateFormulaHere>
)

At this point the Valid property of your form will be accurate and you can use this for your DisplayMode property of the submit button:

If(SharePointForm1.Valid, Disabled, Edit)

That formula provided will not work as it is still looking at an IsBlank on a control directly.  That will always return false.

Please review what I just sent.

your code locked up the form, it would not let me save the form. even after selecting a name from the dropdown or entering a name
