Using SharePoint multiline field in PowerApps text box

Hi,

I am trying to use a multi-line field in Powerapps as a text box input in a gallery. Contrary to single line fields, I get a blank when using: GalleryName.Selected.fieldname

Some suggestions online were to make use of forms, but is there any way other than using forms?

1. From SharePoint will converting a multiline field to a single line field results in data loss?

2. Why is the text box blank and Powerapps not throwing any errors when a multiline field is selected as gallery input?

3. Is there any option to change property of text box to multiline that could get the data?

Thanks

Hi @djohn,

Do you want to inset a TextInput within the Gallery and display the Gallery selected field value?

Could you please tell me that why you want to display the Gallery selected field value within a Gallery?

Here is the thing, the gallery is used to display records from the data source, not a good choice to display what you selected in the Gallery unless this TextInput is outside the Gallery.

Best Regards,
Qi

Hi @v-qiaqi-msft , Sorry I was not clear about the source. The gallery reads data from a SharePoint (SP) library which has multiple fields. Fields which are defined as of type "single line" in SP, I have no issue in getting the data into the gallery as a TextInput using: GalleryName.Selected.fieldname.

But I have some fields in SP, which are multiline. I think it was set as multiline because of the character limit and I am not sure if I change the attribute to a single line, I may lose data. It is with this kind of multi-line fields, I am having trouble getting the data into Powerapps gallery as text input. I simply get a blank and no errors.

Thanks

Hello, could someone please assist? thanks

Hi @djohn,

You mean you could get data from Gallery using Gallery.Selected.fieldName when it is a single-line-of-text column, but for multi-line-of-text column, it does not display anything, right?

Show me how you configure this TextInput, because this could not bet within the Gallery, only be outside of the Gallery.

For a single-line-of-text column, it has 255 characters at max, which means that you could not enter more than 255 characters to your single-line-of-text field. If there is data in single-line, it could display in Gallery.

As long as there is data in your single-line text column, TextInput can definitely display it. If not, it may be a syntax problem.

I have tested that max length of 1000 is well for a TextInput.

Best Regards,
Qi

Hi @v-qiaqi-msft , with single line text there is no issue. It's with multi-line text, that I cannot get it to work.

Patch(
    'DocLibrary',
    Defaults('DocLibrary'),
    {
        SingleLineTextfieldname: SingleLineTextfield.Text,
        'SingleDropdownfieldname': Dropdownfield.Selected.Result,
        'Datefield': DatePicker.SelectedDate,
        'MultiDropdownfieldname: With(
            {
                fieldstr: Concat(
                    MultiDropdownfield.SelectedItems,
                    Result & ", "
                )
            },
            Left(
                fieldstr,
                Len(fieldstr) - 2
            )
        )
    }
)

 The question is how I can get the multi-line fields to show up just like single line fields. I don't get any errors and no results.

@djohn

ThisItem.Multilinefieldname for Text property of a label in a gallery.

@Drrickryp

I tried that the first time. When I use ThisItem.Multilinefieldname, I just get a blank and no error

Hi,

Unfortunately I have the same problem. I think it's connected to the fact that sharepoint list stores multiline of text as a (previous) comment and the text field is empty itself. Look at my picture below

If you want to add something to this field, the field is empty, previous comment is below the text box.
