Value of App.ActiveScreen.Orientation property remains unchanged when device is rotated

I am struggling with making my app respond to changes in screen orientation, so I set up a test app that does just one thing: show the current value of the App.ActiveScreen.Orientation property in a label. App settings for Screen Size + Orientation can be seen in the screenshot attached.

When I run this app on my iPad Pro 12.9 (also tested on Google Pixel 3), the app responds to device rotation by adequately rotating the screen, however the value of the App.ActiveScreen.Orientation property remains unchanged: horizontal. Same with Parent.Orientation property of individual controls. Or with Parent.Width -- that stays stuck at 1366, no matter the device orientation. Without those properties being updated correctly, any attempt at building a responsive app is futile.

So I must me grossly missing something obvious here. But what?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Everything looks to be fine to me. I am not certain what exactly is incorrect. This might be a better question to bring to Microsoft Support, I'll include a link below; if you would like to go down this route. otherwise if any other communities members might know the answer here feel free to chime in.
