What's the purpose of the searchable checkbox for CDS fields?

This is hopefully a simple question. When you create an entity in the CDS, you can mark fields as searchable.

However, it's still possible to use the search and filter functions to match against fields that are NOT defined as searchable. Therefore, what exactly is the purpose of the searchable checkbox?

Does marking a field as searchable provide some sort of indexing to help speed up searches?

Hi @timl,

Currently the only documentation that I could find out talking about the search property is the following:

Entity field properties

Searchable All The data can be searched.

For the field property, there are some of them mentioned in the aritcle below:

Manage custom fields

Also I tried to modify this property with a testing custom entity, and it seems there is no change regarding the search under the data tab.

I will forward this information, and will post back if I got any response.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for looking into this.

Besides curiosity, the reason I'm asking this question is because I want to set all my fields to searchable.

If the searchability flag were to control some internal indexing, I imagine this could slow down record insertions, or have some other sort of impact that I'm unaware of. So I just looking for some general guidence on the matter.

One other thing I'd like to report is that the documentation states that the searchability option applies to all data types. In reality, this isn't the case because if you try to enable searchability on numeric fields, the editor prevents you from saving your changes.

Thanks again,
