available hours selection

Hi guys,

i would need your help. i am working on parking place booking system. I have an parking lot, different users can do a booking for that parking lot for specific data and specific (0-24) hours period. Suppose 1st user booked that place for hours 8-12, another user want to do a booking for 12-16, how i can achieve that 2nd user will see in dropdown etc. only available hours? Thank you in advance

Please any input?

Can you shed a little more detail on the data you are working with?

Is it a SharePoint list, Excel, Sql or other?

Does it (or do you have in mind) a structure for the data?  Are they a simple list of start times and durations, or are they more of a pre-built 24 hour "slot list"?

This would be helpful to know.

Also, are you sure you are wanting a drop down list of times or are you looking for a more interactive list/chart/grid?

Kind of like this example I threw together.  (it is based on a simple list of "booking" start times and durations.)

Hi Randy,

the data source is the sharepoint excel, however i intend to use ms sql in the future.

Basically, i am trying to keep it as simple as possible, so user will choose the parking day, and get the list of parking places. Once he select specific parking place, he will get the list of bookings made, and there will be something like "add booking" and there you should see 2 dropdowns (start and end), first for start and second for end hour. And here comes the issue, as i cannot get avaible hour ranges to be booked. I was trying to create formula using Clearcollect and Addcolumns , but with no success. Is there any simple solution? Thank you in advance. Jan

So, I don't know your exact "what if" logic, so I am going to make some assumptions in my thought process.

There are some challenges with your scenario.  The challenge I see would be dealing with those drop-downs.  Although not impossible, might be a challenge in which you'd rethink your design (and choice of controls).

I went with the grid list like I showed because of the challenges in this example:

Simple Example:  Space is booked from 10am to 11:59am and also from 3:00pm to 5:59pm

So, user navigates to the date and the parking place - no problem, BUT

In the start time drop down will you have every possible open hour available?  And even so, what would you have for the end time?  It would seem that the end time would be unavailable until a user selects a start time because you would need to calculate the list of end times.

What if the user is looking for a block of 5 hours?  In the above example, and using your design concept, they would have to do a lot of "brain work" to notice that there is not a block of 5 hours available between 12PM and 2:59PM.  However, they might choose the 12PM (because they didn't do the brain-work) and then have to be confronted with the fact that there are only 3 hours available at that time.

So, although you can get to the point you are trying to get to, yes, it will take a lot of manipulation of values and they will have to be carefully choreographed with the OnSelect's and OnChanges of the drop downs.

What I might be suggesting is something quicker for your user audience.

Taking your last picture, I throw this one back at you. In this case, the person has navigated to the date and the parking space and now sees availabilty, can select the time(s) they want and then submit them with a "book" button.

You'll have a lot less struggle to develop this as well.

Just a thought...

Hi Randy,

appreciate your suggestions, does no look bad at all. I got your points regarding the the window of available hours, and yes the start dropdown have to be selected first, then end time will be updated. However i still thinnk that would be better option in my case, cause i dont want users to check every available hour from the list. Do you think it is feasible to implement such a list in dropdown?

Looking forward to your response

Thank you

Jan

@js86definitely not impossible, but you're going to have to do some complex logic to populate the drop downs.

I leaned more (in my example) to letting the user's brain do some of the logic for you.

But, if you're going with the dropdowns, you're going to need to (based on their initial "start" choice) figure out when the next "unavailable" time would be, then build a list of ending times from that.  Plus, you'll probably need to make sure you deal with :59's rather than :00 for end times (considering that for the purpose of filtering and searching for end times).

So, using my example:

- If someone chooses 12:00PM as their start time, you'll need to first lookup when the next "unavailable" time will be (in this case 3:00PM).  Then build a collection of options that include 12:59, 1:59 and 2:59 as end times.  The key here would be finding the next unavailable and then building from that.  You couldn't just find all the unavailable times because that would include 5:59, 6:59, etc...which would all span an unavailable block of time.

- If someone chooses 2:00PM, then you will have to determine that then next unavailable time is 3:00 and build a list with at least one option of 2:59PM.

So...yes, you can do it, but oh the amount of logic you will need.  Lots of filters, lookups and collections all working off of OnSelects, OnChanges and other events.

I'd love to hear how that turns out.
