default blank value for dropdown

Hello! Please can someone help me with sorting a default blank value for my dropdown?

The App is pulling its data from a SQL database.

There is a table for applications, where each row has an AppName and an AppID.

There is also a table for Costs. This table allocates an Application to the CostID. Therefore setting the correlating AppID to that Cost row.

I have a dropdown. I want this to take the AppID within the CostTable, and pull the associated AppName from the same row as that AppID within the ApplicationsTable.

I have used the below code on the dropdown's default - this is working fine.

LookUp('[dbo].[fp_cat_apps]', ThisItem.AppID = AppID, AppName)

The dropdown's items is set to

 '[dbo].[fp_cat_apps]'

The patch for this section is

AppID: Dropdown1_2.Selected.AppID

As I say this works, however where I face issues is where there is no assigned AppID within the CostTable.

I need this to show a blank value (or a "select Application" tooltip).

This is vital as until the user has assigned an AppID (via an AppName) there will be no AppID's assigned.

I have tried using a collection with a first blank value but can't seem to get this to work.

Is there any way to get the dropdown to look at the CostTable's AppID and if it is blank, set a bank (or "select Application") value?

I don't want this to be a value within the database as it will muck up other values (e.g the number of applications), and don't want to be filtering everything.

Thanks In advance

If you have a blank in your collection it should work as long as you have AllowEmptySelection set to true for the Dropdown

My suggestion would be to use a combo box instead of dropdown.

It allows for nothing to be selected without any extra steps and it also allows for searching, which is helpful to users.

Thanks for your reply.

Please can you clarify how to do the collection? Not sure if I have done it correctly

Hi! Thanks for your reply.

I have tried a combo box but couldn't seem to get it to like the look up code.

How can I get the combo box to show the default as the AppName of whatever AppID is in that row? Then also tell it to leave blank if AppID is empty?

TIA

I thought you said you were using a collection as the entries in the dropdown. How is the AppID derived?

I tried using a collection to hold the AppName and AppIDs plus a blank entry, but couldn't get this to work. The data is coming directly from the SQL table into the gallery and dropdown.

I tried

in the screen on visible

ClearCollect(BlankApp, {AppName: "-"}); Collect(BlankApp,'[dbo].[fp_cat_apps]'.AppName,'[dbo].[fp_cat_apps]'.AppID)

in the dropdown items

BlankApp

in the dropdown default

LookUp(BlankApp, ThisItem.AppID = AppID, AppName)

For the Combo box you will have:

Items= '[dbo].[fp_cat_apps]'

Fields= AppName

DefaultSelectedItems= LookUp('[dbo].[fp_cat_apps]', AppID=ThisItem.AppID)

If the Lookup doesn't find anything it will default to blank so nothing special is needed for that.
