generating a list for dropdown or field validation

Is there a way to auto generate a list of numbers?  My scenario is that there is an initial quantity field (FIELDA), then a second qty field (FIELDB) I do not want the user to enter a value in FIELDB that is greater than FIELDA.  One option would be autogenerate a list for a dropdown and use that as the second fields method of input.  I can manually create a table of [1, 2, 3, 4,...] then use a formula similar to FIRSTN([manual created table], FIELDA) as the items formula of FIELDB.  I do not expect the qty to be very large so this is a possible option.  The other option would be to have a field validation on FIELDB so that user cannot enter a value greater than FIELDA.  I am not sure how this is done in PowerApps.  Thanks for the help!

From my testing it takes around 4-5 seconds for the string to come back from Power Automate. You could always do this in the OnStart property of your app and use the Concurrent function to fetch this at the same time as loading the rest of your data.

I would suggest using this code in your dropdown items property. 

 

Filter([1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10], Value <= Value(TextInput_MRBQTY.Text))

 

 

The code above creates a single column table of the numbers 1-to-10.  Then a FILTER is applied so only numbers equal to or less than MRBQTY appear.  You can extend this number range as long as you wish: say to 1-to-100 if necessary.

Yes, that is an option. But what I want to know is:

  • if the '1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10' could be auto generated? so that I don't need to type in 100 numbers.
  • If I decide not to use a dropdown for the second field, can I create a field validation so that the user can not select a value in FIELDB that is greater than FIELDA. I really haven't seen field validations except for the 'required' option on fields.

Hi @Anonymous ,

 

Not sure if this is the most elegant solution, but you could use a loop in Power Automate to generate the numbers from 1 to 100 - see attached image.

 

This can then return a string of [1,2,3...100] to Powerapps. You can then use the Split() function on the returned value with a comma as the delimiter to generate the values you need for the dropdown.

#2  Have you tried my proposed solution?  I believe it already prevents this from happening.

This option looks like it would work.  I wonder how long it would take and if the user would see a lag.

#1 - What I don't want is to hard code the list. Yes, I can create a manual list, but I am looking for a more elegant solution.

 

#2 - for this I do not want to use a list.  I just want to compare FIELDB to FIELDA and give the user an error if FIELDB > FIELDA and prevent submitting of the record.
