how to change the data source in powerapps?

hi. i have a powerapps form linking to a sharepoint site data source. how do i delete that data source and replace all instances of it with another sharepoint data source?

reason: i used a tutorial on this site and was able to export my powerapps form to another site. the new sharepoint site is exact mirror of the old site. the exported form carried over it's old datasource connection, just need to replace that part.

@vammers if you can share the scripts that would be great. I will post this as a request for enhancement. It is crazy to change everything just because you want to test an app and then move into production.

Is anyone using a change control mechanism?

You can see the code here - https://github.com/vamshikgovind/PowerPlatformDevOps.git

Note: only use this as reference, the scripts have been changed to make them publicly available. I am writing a blog about how to use the scripts, but it will take a bit longer.

First run the devtoolsinstaller to ensure all the sdks, ps modules needed are installed. Then look at the environment variable generator script to find out how I am generating mappings that are related to the solution.

Export and unpack is used to extract the code so that it can be pushed into git.

Postdeployment script is used to set ownership of power apps that are imported as managed solutions.

UpdateEnvironmentSettings is used to replace the list ids and pack them back into solution. This script is executed from with in the devops pipeline.

The approach of deleting the data sources and readding works for my use case -- canvas app, mix of custom and locked data cards.

Another option which works fine for me now is to use the collection functionality. For all app objects.

Whenever I need to test against another identical source (name and structure) I only have to delete all SharePoint connections and re-add them from the other source. So keep the collections. During the add process you can allow replacement of the collections.

This process only takes me 2 minutes for over 20 lists.

Hope this is helpful for all of you.

Can you elaborate on how to use collections to help with changing sharepoint lists?

@PaulSR, please elaborate on how to use collections to do this. I, too, am trying to move from dev to production with a Sharpoint/Microsoft List without have to edit every buttons Text and Patch formulas. This is a major oversite with PowerApps especially if you are trying to create a template app that will be used on different projects.

Certainly something for me to look into. For all who are not familiar reading those ps scripts it would be nice if you extend the README.md with a process description.

it is a very simple process.

  1. connect your data
  2. store your data in a collection using the ClearCollect function
  3. refer to your collection instead of to the connected datasource

now when you remove your connected datasource and re-add it from another environment all is still working.

Remember 1: the names and structures of your datasources in the different environments needs te be exactly the same.

Remember 2: when you need to update the data you also have to create a writeback from your collection to your

connected datasource. For this you can use the Patch command

No, no solution as of yet. If you use data cards you are screwed. I would not use that function to add fields to canvas apps.

An old post, but I had a similar issue and this worked for me.

I have a Staff leave request app, I need to create a new version for the next year of leave with some changes to the columns.

I duplicated the lists in sharepoint with a new name, made my changes. In the power app I connected the new data sources and then disconnected the old.

And then in each view I corrected the data source reference in the formula bar.

From:

SortByColumns(Filter('Leave Log','Created By'.Email = UserEmail),"Created", Descending)
To:
SortByColumns(Filter('Leave Log 2022','Created By'.Email = UserEmail),"Created", Descending)

Everything else in the view picked up the change. Hopefully usefull for someone.
