sharepoint power app form patch row multiple times but dont create duplicate records?

I have a button that patches a column value in my sharepoint list. if the user wants to change this, or undo it, the next patch function makes a new row/record instead.

how can i prevent this from happening?

ive thought of submitting the form after the patch and entering the form in edit mode

submitform(formname);

editform(formname);

but that isnt working

Yes, if it is another column, then just set the Update property for that field to reflect the other control/field you want.

what is the difference between patch and update?

id like on button press to be able to change the values of columns

afaik i need to do this by patch  with the ID of the row we are currently in, but the problem is when I do patch again, for some reason the form thinks were not still on the same id that we were on the previous time patch was run, even though its the same form, so it should be the same ID, right?

You don't need to do all of that in PowerApps, it will update and refresh itself already.  Keep it simple!

If you have a form, you do not want to be doing Patches or Updates.  You just want your values to be based off of the controls you have in your form.

Perhaps if you provide a picture of what you are trying to do, that would help understand a little more about what you are facing.

isnt patch specifically for modifying columns, not creating new ones?

@dperez13

Patch is a function that patches two or more records together.

But you are working with a form.  A form will do everything you need and you need not worry about Patching or Updating.

my column is deferring to its default value, my code looks like this:

UpdateIF(tablename, ID = thisitem.id, {columnName:"string Value"});

thats on button select

and then i have a basic submit form button.

maybe its thisitem.ID thats not finding it?

You do not need to use Patch or UpdateIf...you do all of this in your form and use SubmitForm to submit the column values.  Why are you trying to do double the effort?

I am not trying to double the effort, its a form that multiple people will edit and based off their drop down selections, a certain columns value needs to be updated/modified/changed. id like to have this column not be inputted by the user directly, but have its value automatically filled in based off another user input (red or blue choice, as mentioned previously). if i am missing a basic way of updating a column/field, id like to know how else to do it?

i am only trying to have some column fields auto populate with values based off other data card drop down selections, how do I do this?

@dperez13

So again, as I mentioned, you would set your Update property of the datacard for the field/column you want to change based off of the other input you have on the form.

So if you have a Column called "Color" and you have an input for that where a user would enter Red or Blue and you want another field (let's call it ColorStatus) in your record to have a specific value based on that input, then you would simply set the Update property of your ColorStatus field to reflect what you want.

Ex.

Switch(yourColorEntry.Text,
    "Red", "Red Status Set",
    "Blue", "Blue Status Set"
)

The ColorStatus column then would get the value you want when the form is submitted.

The ColorStatus column needs to be a part of your form fields, but it does not need to be visible to the user if you don't want.

All is then handled when you perform a SubmitForm on the form.
