Improved app rendering crashes our app in the latest version of iOS client

I implore you to not remove classic mode rendering - The latest version of the Powerapps client on iOS (3.18101.21) causes our app to crash when navigating between screens when "improved" app rendering is turned on.

The previous version of the Powerapps client on iOS had weird rendering issues when navigating between screens (in addition to some other rendering bugs) but the latest version outright crashes upon navigation.

If you remove classic mode rendering, we will be unable to update and publish our app in the future, stranding it in its current version.  However, if you code the client to ignore when improved app rendering is turned off, you will break our production application that is used by many of our employees to complete their work every day.  This would not be acceptable.

I'd be happy to work with someone, providing an export of the app or a video of the issue.

Thanks,

Brad Pipins

Re: Improved app rendering crashes our app in the latest version of iOS client

Hi @cursors,

I haven't seen any similar issue. And I cannot reproduce your issue. My apps all work fine on iOS. No matter with the older version or the latest one. Is this only happening to one specific app? Is this happening to multiple mobiles? Would you please try with different ones to have a test?

In addition, you could share the session ID here.

Regards,

Mona

@v-monli-msft

Apologies for the delay, I expected to get an email when a reply was posted here.  I did not.

In whatever version of powerapps we are on now, the crashes have stopped but there are weird rendering issues when:

  • you navigate between screens - somewhat reminiscent of FOUC on websites, in that some screen elements flash on the screen at a large size during the navigation animation.  Also large blocks of black.  It's not that easy to describe.
  • a horizontal gallery that is partially off screen no longer scrolls to the left.  Evrything that is offscreen is cut off.
  • some tab-like buttons that are restyled when other tab-like buttons are selected, using DisplayMode,, UpdateContext, and If statements (pretty standard stuff)

I'd be happy to provide a video if you would point me to a secure and private place to share it.

Re: Improved app rendering crashes our app in the latest version of iOS client

@v-monli-msftI've run into a similar issue with a basic app that has a gallery that loads html data from a local collection.  In classic the app renders the gallery completely but in "improved" it displays partial information to display... my app is unusable with partial data.

The gallery is fed from collection Crisis Cards after tapping on a specific crisis type:

ClearCollect(
    CrisisCards,
    {
        Screen: "CHEMICAL",
        Title: Std_SecureLife.Text,
        Color: Std_SecureLife.Color,
        Fill: Std_SecureLife.Fill,
        HTML: "<ul>
<li>Call <tr><td><a href=""tel:+911""><font color=""DodgerBlue"">911</a></td></tr> if there is a threat to life</li>
<br></br></ul>"
    },
    {
        Screen: "CHEMICAL",
        Title: Std_SecureSite.Text,
        Color: Std_SecureSite.Color,
        Fill: Std_SecureSite.Fill,
        HTML: "<ul>

<li>Determine whether to evacuate job site/ keep working/ stop work. If evacuation is necessary, assemble at the designated rally point defined in the jobsite emergency action plan</li>
<li>If safe and possible, contain the spill from entering rivers, streams, storm drains, etc. </li>
<li>Notify <tr><td><a href=""tel:/" & LookUp(
            ContactDetails,
            Role = "SafetyPrimary",
            Phone
        ) & """><Font color=""DodgerBlue"">" & LookUp(
            ContactDetails,
            Role = "SafetyPrimary",
            'Full Name' & ", " & Title
        ) & "</a></td></tr>, then notify the project VP.</li>
<br></br></ul>"
    },
    {
        Screen: "CHEMICAL",
        Title: Std_SecureComm.Text,
        Color: Std_SecureComm.Color,
        Fill: Std_SecureComm.Fill,
        HTML: "<ul>
<li>Emergency personnel will determine the need to evacuate neighboring properties.</li>
<br></br></ul>"
    },
    {
        Screen: "CHEMICAL",
        Title: Std_SecureDavis.Text,
        Color: Std_SecureDavis.Color,
        Fill: Std_SecureDavis.Fill,
        HTML: "<ul>
<li>If approached by the media, do not answer any specific questions. Calmly state that a DAVIS representative will be providing an update momentarily, and refer all reporters to <tr><td><a href=""tel:/" & LookUp(
            ContactDetails,
            Role = "Marcomm",
            Phone
        ) & """><Font color=""DodgerBlue"">" & LookUp(
            ContactDetails,
            Role = "Marcomm",
            'Full Name' & ", " & Title
        ) & "</a></td></tr>.</li>
<li>Limit communications to emergency responders and DAVIS team. DO NOT talk, text, photograph or communicate about the incident via social media or otherwise to anyone. </li>
<br></br></ul>
"
    }
);
Navigate(
    scrChecklist,
    Fade,
    {SelectedCrisis: Button_navCHEMICAL.Text}
)

On the next screen, scrChecklist, the gallery's Items field is simply the collection Crisis Cards.  References to anything with "std_" prefix are referencing fields on another hidden screen with templates for color, button sizes/text, etc.

Each crisis type has four cards:

  1. Secure Life
  2. Secure Site
  3. Secure Community
  4. Secure DAVIS

Classic rendering displays all 4 sections with complete text and proper spacing.

Improved rendering shows the first 3 with partial HTML text and exaggerated spacing with large blank spaces within each gallery item.
