Linking and updating data from more than one Azure SQL Server Table

I can easily create a PowerApp from my Azure SQL server table.

This table has a simple autonumber primary key.

It also has relationships and key fields to two other tables above it in the schema.

I have just about mastered using the relationships and picklist in the CDM entities.

But how do I, or can I, use the equivalent of a combo field and return a readable field from the other two tables  and when I get to the edit screen and create a new record or edit and update a record how can I get to the relevant rows in the other tables so that I can read the row data and select the correct one to enter the key value of the record in the other table.

Or do I have to go to Visual Studio and forget PowerApps?

Hi @Paul_Hayes

You can do everything in PowerApps.

Use a drop down control to select the foreign keys (look-up tables). In advanced properties you choose the display field (see screenshot below).

Patching lookup field is different in SQL and CDS.

  • In SQL you just patch the integer foreign key
  • In CDS you need to patch a record, see this post

Please come back with any specific questions.

Re: Linking and updating data from more than one Azure SQL Server Table

Dear Meneghino

Lookup has given one part of what I need.

I just have to now find out what I need to do when it comes to creating a new record, I think editing the existing records will be fine as long as I can prevent editing on the fields that have the keys to the other tables.

I'll keep you posted and will post the full solution as soon as I have it.

Thanks

Paul
