Patch function

Hi I am trying to use Patch function. My problem is that in one case I want patch new forms and in that case I use

Patch('Complete Form',Defaults('Complete Form'),EditForm1_3.Updates,EditForm1_4.Updates, EditForm1_5.Updates

); Navigate(EmailScreen,None)

In other case I want Patch something which I modified so something which was created before and now I do some modifications.

I found that code should like this :

Patch('Complete Form',My Record,EditForm1_3.Updates,EditForm1_4.Updates, EditForm1_5.Updates

My question is what should be second parameter? I trying everything but nothing works.

Where are you trying to save/update the data?

To Sharepoint List. It works when I save new form but when i want to save modified form it will save the modified and also create the new one.

I am not sure about what you are actually doing but it looks like you are trying to use a form as well as the Patch command.  If you are using a form, the appropriate way to save the form is to use the SubmitForm() command on a button. However, if you require extensive modifications to the form, sometimes it is easier to set up a blank screen and add each control.  Then you would use the patch function to modify each field or to create an entirely new record (row) in the datasource.

It is not the form that is being patched but the underlying data source (table) or collection behind the form. Each field patched needs to refer back to a column or field in the datasource and the second term in the Patch command must identify the record that is being patched.  If your Datasource includes a unique field like ID, it should be displayed on the screen ie.LblID, then the command should be Patch(datasource,Lookup(ds,ID=LblID.Value),{field1:dropdown1.Value,field2:dropdown2.Value,etc.}).  For a short background on the differences between using SubmitForm() and Patch(), check out a YouTube called "A Brief Comparison Of Patch and SubmitForm" by Mr.Dang . Hope this helps.

Hi I have something like this. When I want to create new data(new user data), I have 3 screens I use Patch function :

And when I edit I use SubmitForm:

My question is if I am using it right. Because something I lose my data and I am not sure if its good way how to store data.

I could get into detail but it looks like you have made this overly complicated for yourself.  You shouldn't need to use Patch() to do what you are trying to accomplish.   I suggest that  you start over again and let Powerapps create your screens automatically.  The instructions are given for letting Powerapps make a Sharepoint app from your list are given at: docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powerapps/maker/canvas-apps/app-from-sharepoint.  I hope this helps.

Thanks for advices. But when I dont use patch fuction in the second one than it doesnt work. Its strange. In one forms it works in another not. I created these forms automaticcly by using PowerApps but there was problem that it was just for one screen. But I need more screens because I have lot of questions. And thats the problem.

Have you tried using a scrollable screen to get all of your questions in one form?

Yes, but it is impractical. I want to have something like survey which have like 3 screens or something like that. Just have one screen and X questions there is really bad I think.

I think I see what you are trying to do now. Allow me to restate the problem to see if I get it. Starting with the three screens that were originally generated from Sharepoint by Powerapps and starting with the browsegallery screen, you can select the right arrow on the gallery to go to the detailscreen and clicking the Edit icon on that screen it takes you to the editscreen. Since you have more than 8 fields that you want to edit you want to have several edit screens and navigate between them changing and saving data. Also on the browsegallery screen you can select + and go directly to the editscreen in NewForm mode. You also want to have several editscreens since you have more than 8 fields to fill in you want to navigate to the additional editscreens sequentially and continue to fill in fields until you have completed the record.

I tried solution below using a Sharepoint list with 16 fields and two editscreens and it worked for me.

First going back to the original app created by Powerapps from your Sharepoint list.

  • Dupicate the EditScreen so that you have enough screens to account for all of your fields. In my case I only had to make one copy
  • Rename the editscreens, editscreen1 and editscreen2 and the forms on them EditForm1 and EditForm2 respectively.
    • On editscreen1:
      • Remove the check icon from the upper right corner
      • Change the OnSuccess property of EditForm1 from Back() to false
      • Add two buttons to the screen.
        • On button1:
Make the Text property of button1 "Next",
          Make the OnSelect property SubmitForm(EditForm1);Navigate(editscreen2.Fade)
        • On button2:
          • Make the Text property of button2 "Save/BacK".
          • Make the OnSelect property of button2 SubmitForm(EditForm1);Back().
          • Make the Visible property If(EditForm1.Mode=FormMode.Edit,true,false)
      • On editscreen2:
        • Add one button to the screen
          • Make the Text property "Save"
          • Make the OnSelect property SubmitForm(EditForm2)
        • On EditForm2
          • Remove all of the fields that were on editscreen1
          • Add all of the fields that did not fit on editscreen1
          • Change the Item property to: EditForm1.LastSubmit
          • Change the OnSuccess property to Navigate(BrowseScreen1,None)

The key principle here is that the record is created from the first editscreen and the subsequent screens edit that record by referencing to the last submitted property of EditForm1. So when you select the + icon on the gallery screen, it navigates directly to the first editscreen in NewForm mode. There are two options offered on the first editscreen. The "X" icon resets the form and returns to the gallery. The Next button creates the new record, saves the data and navigates to the second editscreen to enter the rest of the data into the new record. The second editscreen is then "editing" the lastsubmitted record and not creating a new one, avoiding the creation of dupicate records.

When editing an existing record, that record is chosen on the gallery screen and viewed on the detail screen. When the pen icon on the detail screen is pressed, the app navigates to the first editscreen, opens it in edit mode and makes the "Save/Back" button visible. This allows the user to make changes to data in the first editscreen and go back or the user can choose the Next button to make changes to the rest of the fields It is not visible when a New record is being entered so that the user is forced to go to the next screen to finish filling in the data.  . I hope this works for you.
