Using SQL Server and Environment = secure?

Hello all,

I am an intern at a company and they have tasked me with creating forms and apps to move towards digitalizing the forms that they currently use paper for. I have done some research about environments and using an SQL server as a way to store my tables/data. We have an on premise SQL server which I can use, but we don't currently have any PowerApps plans as of now (besides the default free version that came with Office365). Before jumping on purchasing Plan1, I want to make sure it can be used how I think it can be.

If I wanted to be able to store personal/private data in an SQL database and then have that SQL server as a gateway  connection in an environment, where only IT admins are a maker/owner, would that be enough to prevent another employee (who shouldn't have access to the private data) to connect to that database through PowerApps or by any other means?

Also, would it work fine we only had one person/account with a Plan1 license? Would other employees who are not in that environment still be able to use the app as it is meant to be used? Or would they need to also have a Plan1 or 2 license?

Thanks!

Hi @Nyk ,

You need to share the gateway to the users who need to use the app that contains on-premise data sources. To add/remove users to the gateway, switch to the “Users” tab, add new users and specify the permission level for the user using the drop down. You can also choose the connection types you want to allow the users to have access to, on your gateway.

Connections to SQL Server use a service account and are sharable. So, you can select a SQL connection and switch to the “Share” tab of the connection in order to see the list of all users using the shared SQL connection.

Re: Using SQL Server and Environment = secure?

To clear things up, I think I have found that I need to get Plan 2 to utilize environments. And I believe that the SQL on premises server can be contained in an environment, but do I have to share the gateway with everyone in my organization in order for them to use the app? If so, will they be able to access data via the gateway?
