Get HTTP to download PDF Tableau

Hi everyone,

One of my duties is preparing reports for distribution to our outside business parners. They come out at a regular invterval and are always sent to the same person. What I would like to do is to automate this as much as possible, and I am pretty close.

With Tableau Server, you can append various attributes to the end of a report's URL to modify it.

For example, if I go to www.ourserver.tableau.com/myreport it will show my report.
If I go to www.ourserver.tableau.com/myreport.pdf it will create a PDF of my report

If I go to www.ourserver.tableau.com/myreport.PDF?status=open&vendor=contoso it will filter my report to show only open orders from Contoso and create a PDF.

What I have set up is a sharepoint list of all my regular reports, where they are sent to and what filters need to be applied. When a report is due, I get emailed a link to the PDF I need which I then manually go to, save and distribute.

What I would like to do is automate that last part.

I found a tutporial a while back (Can't find it now) that uses an HTTP request to downlload a PDF file. I tested with a form from the Canadian Revenue Agency and it works fine.image.png

However, when I try it with a link to the PDF report, it fails.image.png

I'm all but sure this is something to do with authentication but that kind of puts me beyond the limits of my knowledge in this area. If anyone has advice on what to do next, please let me know. Will I have to make a custom connection, or is there a way I can set up the authorization within the HTTP request itself to accomplish this?

Re: Get HTTP to download PDF Tableau

Hi @RTW ,

The error message says that the host name you provided in the HTTP action could not be resolved. Please make sure you have filled a proper URL in the URI field.

Please check the following doc on HTTP action for more details:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/connectors/connectors-native-http

Best regards,

Mabel

Re: Get HTTP to download PDF Tableau

@v-yamao-msft , I've made a bit of progress.

I figured out how the authentication works. I set up PostMan to test my requests as its a bit quicker than Flow, and I got it to work there. I get the response back with my authorization token, which I then pass through to the next command to generate the PDF. This all works flawlessly in Postman.

However, having recreated the request exactly, line by line in Flow it fails to work.

I've tried with and without the "www." in the URL as well as various other variations for the authentication. The response is always the same, "UnresolvableHostName" but the host name is correct. Any idea why this is failing?

I tried exporting my collection in Postman into Flow but I got the same error when testing.
