Trouble Connecting to and Updating Excel in Flow

Hello All,

I am having some challenges working with Excel in Flow.

I am trying to use Flow to create a new Excel, and populate it based on a SharePoint list:

  1. when a new item added in SharePoint
  2. Generate an Excel file from a template, and
  3. Populate it with the SharePoint item data.

This has turned from a fairly simple exercise to a very complicated one because the "Update a Row (Excel Online Business)" action seems to require that the Excel to-be-updated already exists, at the time I am developing the Flow. Which of course it does not (the flow creates the Excel from a template, and then wants to update that newly created file). I guess that makes sense, but has made a simple solution into a very complicated one.

My work-around to the above is to update the template (because it exists) with SharePoint list data, and then create the new Excel from that. Which works as long as we don't have multiple people adding SP items at approximately the same time. Maybe a check-out-check-in process will help, but it feels clunky.

In trying to find a better solution to the above, the second issue I am finding is the Excel Online actions don't seem to be happy with Excel files that have external queries (like querying a SP list), or even links from one Excel file to another. Is that true?

What I am seeing is frequent "Failed to Fetch", having to frequently re-authenticate the user connection, and API errors as shown below.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this?

Thank you.,

Hi @GerryBrimacombe ,

When configuring Excel connector-related actions, we can only specify files and tables through drop-down lists or options in File browse.

This is a known limitation and variables cannot be configured in these fields.

In addition, if you want to specify the Excel file in the SharePoint Library, please ensure that the specified file is not opened or checked out during configuration. And make sure that the table is defined in the specified Excel file for selection.

Please take a try.
