Is this possible with PowerApp?

Hello,

My supervisor has asked me to look into a possible solution for a problem we are having. We are a big automotive factory with several offloading/loading locations on-site. Because of the age of the plant we are limited in our options and we cannot relocate these locations. We are looking at an App solution to have a better control of the truck drivers when on-site. I am being told from a friend that PowerApp might be a solution for this. I've already started reading tutorials on PowerApps, but I'd like the community feedback if its possible to build an App that would fullfill all requirements.

Requirements:

There are 2 sides to the app, one for the reception and one for the drivers. The reception could work on their dekstops, the drivers would receive a smartphone with wifi connection but no simcard.

Reception side:

  • Send messages to a certain 'user' (this user would be linked to a driver), preferably push notifications. For example: "Ok to go to Warehouse 22, ask for person X"
  • Ability to receive messages back from other users; "Finished offload at Warehouse 22"
  • Optional: When the OK is given to a certain driver we would like this to be linked to an access database with a map from the plant. This map would then receive a new colour to confirm that a truck is enroute to the location (though this is no priority of this app it would be nice to know if it is possible)

Driver side:

  • Receive messages from reception
  • Buttons where the driver can communicate it's status back to the reception (Arrived at the location, empty/ready at the location, etc.)
  • Information of on site rules
  • Optional: Show the route to the location with GPS signals or with a predefined set of instructions

Is this possible to make with Powerapp? Considering the different requirements - will I need to make 2 apps, one for reception and one for the drivers?

Thanks for the help!

Re: Is this possible with PowerApp?

Hi @CNHZedelgem,

your project sounds very promising.

In my opinion it is possible to build such a solution with PowerApps and Flow.

There are several possibilities and approaches, which you could pursue.

For example you could build two apps with an common data environment (for example by using Azure SQL database or CDS):

https://powerapps.microsoft.com/en-us/common-data-service/

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/sql-database/

You could also set up a SharePoint Online environment as a kind of "database".

https://powerapps.microsoft.com/es-es/blog/powerapps-and-sharepoint/

You could also try it with an access database but it could be tricky. Please have a look at this thread: https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/General-Discussion/How-to-connect-PowerApps-with-local-MS-Access...

Put in highly simplified terms: Due to - but not only because of - the common data environment (cf. database) you can create links between both apps. This means that you could load (and exchange) data from the common data source(s) into both apps.

In terms of the Receiption side you could develop a desktop app using the following ideas and formulas:

- Google Map / Bing Map to track your drivers and check locations: https://powerapps.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/image-control-static-maps-api/

- Refresh your data source: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powerapps/maker/canvas-apps/functions/function-refresh

- Maybe you can onset the advantages of the timer control

In terms of the Driver side you could develop an app (desktop) using the following ideas and formulas:

- Push Notifications: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powerapps/maker/canvas-apps/add-notifications

- GPS Location etc.: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powerapps/maker/canvas-apps/functions/signals

- User function to implement a check in system: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powerapps/maker/canvas-apps/functions/function-user

- Using the OnSelect-Property on buttons to do some actions (send data and emails, change the status etc.)

Best regards,

PA

Re: Is this possible with PowerApp?

Hi @CNHZedelgem

You might want to go through below links which can be helpful for your requirement

for Notification:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powerapps/maker/canvas-apps/add-notifications

Known Limitation is something which you need to go through

for Location:

https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/General-Discussion/Is-it-possible-to-user-GPS-in-PowerApps/td-p/...

You can do this in single app and based on user group you can switch between screens.

Thanks.
