Powerapps is too slow to actually use day to day

This app is absolutely crippled and useless in it's current state with how slow it is editing even moderately complex apps.

PowerApps is at a point now where even typing is so slow showing input that it's totally useless as an app building program and leading us down the road of moving into some modern software that isn't impacting our production.

What is being done to address how poor the performance is?

Can we please get some answers on what to do to help improve performance?

People have asked many times in this forum and the typical Microsoft response is no response at all and that's just not cutting it anymore. We need answers!

Re: Powerapps is too slow to actually use day to day

Hi JRaasumaa,

Do all the apps on your side load slowly or only the complex ones?

What’s the data source the app is based on?

How many data are there in the data source?

How about the Internet connection/speed on your side?

On which device are you running the app? What’s the OS?

Please help collect above information.

Best regards,
Mabel Mao

Re: Powerapps is too slow to actually use day to day

Any app becomes slow the more I use it, our current app is moderately complex but it is growing quickly.

The data is both on premise SQL as well as CDS.

Very little data, maybe 1500 rows in our largest table. The entire SQL databse it's connecting to is currently only 42mb.

Our internet is 60mbps up and down.

Dell Precision 7510 laptop, i7, 32gb ram, ssd with Windows 10

PowerApps is slow in both the editor and the web, it's cripplingly slow when doing the predictive lookup. I can type a word and watch letters show up one at a time over a few seconds because of this predictive lookup. It's slow when moving items around on screen in both. It's slow moving between screens in both app and web editor.

Not sure what else to say except this has to be happening for more than just myself and it would be nice to find a solution soon before we hit a point of it being broken and beyond repair.

Hi @JRaasumaa

Maybe this can be of help:

It's not the app performance when using it that is the issue, it's the performance of editing the app itself that's not working.

If I can figure out how to upload a video of how slow it is I will.

Re: Powerapps is too slow to actually use day to day

Hi @JRaasumaa

Thanks for clarifying.  However, editing performance is linked to general performance of the app (since any changes to the code are propagated to the rest of the app in real time as the app is edited).  Hence the issues often originate from many formulas being dependent on each other, and numerous screens/controls being updated.

Happy to try to help further.

I've experience a lot of what @Meneghino is talking about.

I think a cool feature for development mode would be a toggle switch at the top where you turn real-time execution on and off.  Many times while I'm editting my App, I'd prefer for code to NOT be executing while I write it!

Agreed @NEPatton

I have noticed that in the latest version of Studio, at least timers stop running when editing the app.  This is a great improvement, since previously it would become impossible to edit a screen if a timer had been set to too short a value and the OnTimerEnd was a Navigate action.

@Meneghino - I've done that!  I did it on the 2nd screen I had ever built, and I was really confused about what was going on when the dev apps started navigating me away mid edit. Smiley Happy

To the suggestion board!!!!!

While typically I would agree with you about the editing and regular app performance being directly related in this case I believe this to be incorrect.

The app does not have these same crippling slowness issues when being used through a browser or iPad/Android app, only the editing is impacted.

I hope that the PowerApps and Microsoft staff take the time to actually look at some of these editor issues as this is supposed to be their replacement for many other technologies moving forward for data management and app development but right now PowerApps is no more than a beta test and not a fully polished Microsoft product.
