launch outlook app for mailto vs. default mail app

Hi,

Our only HIPAA compliant mobile email app is the O365 Outlook mail client, so in our PowerApp mobile app we want Launch(mailto:xxx@abc.com) to launch Outlook allowing the clinician user to email a colleague and ask a question about one of their patients.

Currently Launch(mailto...) opens the standard IOS Mail app. Is there a way for me to ensure it opens Outlook instead? We know Outlook is installed on the phone/ipad device.

We can use Outlook365.SendEmail(...) but then we need to build a new screen for them to compose the message as this function sends email via Outlook but doesn't open the app allowing them to compose a message.

We can launch Outlook web client via the Launch(URL...) call but we'd rather launch the Outlook app as it is under MDM (via InTune).

Thoughts or advice?

Thanks...Steve

Re: launch outlook app for mailto vs. default mail app

Launch("ms-outlook://compose?to:example@email.com&subject=Subject&body=Message")

Works on iphone, opens Outlook to the compose pane.

Has problems on Android, opens Outlook but not to the compose pane.

Thoughts? Advice?

Re: launch outlook app for mailto vs. default mail app

Hi @Stevel,

Based on the formula you provided, I made a test on my side, the Outlook app could not be opened within my Android device.

I afraid that there is no way to open Outlook to the compose panel within Android device based on the formula you provided in PowerApps currently.

If you would like this feature to be added in PowerApps, please submit an idea to PowerApps Ideas Forum:

https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/PowerApps-Ideas/idb-p/PowerAppsIdeas

Currently, we could only open a Outlook app within Android device from an app rather than open Outlook to the compose pane. If you want to open Outlook app within your Android device from an app, please take a try with the following formula:

Launch("mailto:example@email.com&subject=Subject&body=Message")

Best regards,

Kris

Re: launch outlook app for mailto vs. default mail app

Hi Kris,

Thanks for the response and for checking/verifying for us that Launch("ms-outlook://compose?...) doesn't work on the Android OS.

The generic forumula you proposed works fine on the Android/IOS devices to open the native mail client but does not open Outlook.Since the native mail clients are not HIPAA compliant (but Outlook is) we have a security policy in place to prevent them from adding an account for our health care domain.

What would the idea proposal be? Fix Launch("ms-outlook://compose?...) so it works on Android devices?

Or perhaps to create a LaunchApplication() function that could launch any app on the device? Not even sure that is possible ;>)

Thanks again for your help!
