Adding Power Pages to an existing PowerApp canvas site

Hi

I'm surprised there weren't any posts on this topic (or at least I couldn't find any), I expect there will be others following a similar path either now or in the future.

Background

I came to PowerApps a few years ago from a traditional SQL background and wasn't impressed with the original Common Data Service (CDS) so stuck to using Azure SQL as the database. Similarly, I went with Canvas apps as it gave much more freedom in layout and designer control versus Model Driven apps (and Model Driven wouldn't work with SQL anyway). I generally avoid using forms and prefer to use individual inputs and Patch() as it provides more control (albeit it needs a bit more coding). Lookups use foreign keys and all work fine.

Around 2 years ago I started using Dataverse and followed the same canvas app, individual inputs and foreign key approach for lookups, renaming the default 'Name' Primary Name column to UID and making this an Auto-number (or just setting it as optional and ignoring it). So far so good.

Problem

I'm now wanting to use Power Pages with some of the existing Dataverse tables. However, is there an equivalent method to using individual inputs and foreign key look ups in Power Pages. I can only find views and forms and these only show the foreign key ids in the lookups not the named values.

I've experimented with Liquid and FetchXML a bit and this does seem to be able to join the tables up to display the information correctly (instead of using lists/views). However, there doesn't seen to be a way to enter/edit information without a form which then just has numbers to pick from.

Is there any way around this?

I really don't like the prospect of rebuilding all the tables, transferring the data and then modifying the existing PowerApps (these will still be required).

Thanks in advance.

Hi @Gary_Eden ,

You can use Power Pages Web API to submit data back to the Dataverse using JavaScript. So, you should be able to create your own custom form or other user experiences to submit data.

Hi @OOlashyn

I'm familiar with using JavaScript from my web development days (quite a few years ago now).

Do you know if there are any obvious limitations with using JavaScript within Power Pages?

So there are no limitations for JS per se as with Web API itself - there are problems with retrieving data because table permissions are added to requests incorrectly, Web API doesn't support Dataverse Custom Actions/APIs, etc. But overall - you can create quite a custom experience and go pretty far with Web API. One more thing - if you are adding JS to Custom JS part of the Web Page be aware that there is a limitation on a number of characters you can enter there. So if you hit with a limit - just either create a custom web file and have your JS there (this is ideal as you can also benefit from CDN if you enable it in the future) or add your js in custom web template or directly into the page html.
