Powerapps required fields failing to stop save

Hi, I hope I am not re-treading water here, but have been searching forums and either found fixes that do not work for me or finding other scenarios are not quite the same as I experience.

In Short – when a PowerApp Form is submitted without one or more mandatory fields being filled in, then the fields are saved and we get the error: An entry is required or has an invalid value. Please correct and try again.

I would now like to go into detail:

This problem might be addressed by the fix referenced  by Sketz on 21 April here: https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/General-Discussion/PowerApps-Version-3-18042-An-entry-is-require...

But there is no confirmation that the fix was applied. If this will fix it then does anyone know when the fix is being applied.

My story is this:

I was tasked this year in building a workflow using Powerapps Writing to a Sharepoint List. I had a deadline to have something working by the end of March.

I just about managed this. However one of the very last things I did was apply all the required fields for mandatory information. This was all applied in the PowerApp, leaving the SharePoint List all non-mandatory.

The problem was that if a user did not fill in a mandatory field, instead of the form not submitting, and a message under the relevant field that needs filling in (which is highlighted in red), the PowerApp displayed the error message:

An entry is required or has an invalid value. Please correct and try again.

In a red banner at the top of the screen and submitted what was being entered anyway.

I now have the time to revisit the App and sort out this and other bugs. I made a template out of the live SharePoint List, put it in my development site and developed a new PowerApp to submit a record. After setting up the App, I started adding Required = True to certain fields one by one (the finished product will have some fields required in any event, others have their visible/required fields managed by conditions – but in recreating the PowerApp I did not get as far as conditional statements).

So adding Required=True for the first few was fine. At each step I tested and if I tried submitting without filling in a field the field was highlighted with a request to fill it in, and the record was not saved. Then suddenly the PowerApp reverted to the behaviour I had before (saving data even with a field not filled in and giving the message: An entry is required or has an invalid value. Please correct and try again.

Looking at other forums I tried the following:

Made all fields in the PowerApp not required (it submitted fine) and then re-applied a required field – error returned.

Also in the SharePoint List, originally none of the fields were mandatory. However I made all fields mandatory in SharePoint, made them all non-Mandatory again and tried again – same problem.

Can anyone give me any hints, I have seen a few posts about a fix being considered, but I will need to report back to my employers with some sort of roadmap if this is the case.

Cheers,

AndyC

Re: Powerapps required fields failing to stop save

Hi Kris,

thaks for the reply. I had already as a test created simple powerapps and mandatory forms worked as intended, Also not quite sure why you provided links to SubmitForm control and creating powerapps from Sharepoint Lists.

Now the good news - I have identified what is causing the issue and a workaround. This is because in response to your post, I tried to replicate the issue with a new Powerapp. I simly let Powerapps create a form from the Sahepoint List and made fields mandatory - it continued to work as I made them so.

The only difference I can see was that my PowerApp was a multiple screen solution. Screen 1 asks a question, and answering that sends the form to one of two second screens that contains the larger set of questions.

So I have tried a different approach - When you select the option in te initial screen, it launched one or another totally seperate PowerApp and voila - mandatory fields are working fine.

I will visit later, but I suspect when I finish the form, adding an exit screen will break it again. However I am going to try to have two forms on the same page, their visibility determined by a condition, so once submitted you see an exit message without changing to another screen.

I am going to report this as a bug to Microsoft referencing this thread, so it can be sorted in a future release.

Cheers,

Re: Powerapps required fields failing to stop save

Hi @AndyC,

I have made a test on my side and don't have the issue that you mentioned. The screenshot as below:10.JPG

When I leave a mandatory field empty, then click the Submit button, the error message as you mentioned would be shown up and the SubmitForm function would not be executed.

Please take a try to refresh your SP list data source within your app or re-create your PowerApps app, then check if the issue is solved.

In addition, you could take a try to re-create your SP list on your side, then generate a PowerApps app based on the new created SP list, check if the issue is solved.

More details about the SubmitForm function in PowerApps, please check the following article:

SubmitForm function

More details about generating a PowerApps app from SharePoint, please check the following article:

Kris

Re: Powerapps required fields failing to stop save

Update - I clicked on the 'Report a Bug' issue and was directed back here. Microsoft, can you log this as a bug please.

The problem is in my original post.

The cause is Powerapps with multiple screens.

The workaround is to have multiple single screen Powerapps, connected using the Launch command.

Re: Powerapps required fields failing to stop save

I have been getting the same error while connecting to CRM Data Source from PowerApps since 18 Jun 2018. Before this, everything was working just fine.

Hi,

Do you have more than one screen in your App?

Re: Powerapps required fields failing to stop save

Hi @AndyC

Not sure if this is eactly what you are looking for, but I have found the below method very usefull to do validation on forms without triggering the infamous "An entry is required or has an invalid value. Please correct and try again." error.
