Setting Gallery Items via selected List Value

I have a ListBox filled with all the names of the tables currently in my SQL Server database. I also have a Gallery next to the list. I want to be able to change the Items source of the gallery based off my selection from the DB table list.

I have tried using the OnSelect trigger to set a variable first of all e.g. Set(tableName, ListBox1.Selected.Value). If I wanted to set the items source Gallery1 manually, it's as simple as typing '[dbo].[ExampleTable]' in the Items Property.

Is there a way of passing a string variable such as my tableName variable into the Items property of Gallery1 e.g '[dbo].["tableName"]'? The only reason I want to achieve this is due to the large number of tables in my DB. It would be nice to select the table name from ListBox1 that would then set the Item source of Gallery1.

NOTE: I have already imported each table into the list of data sources if that is of any benefit.

Thanks.

@ajennings1

You cannot reference items by their string name.  I do have an idea in the idea board about this that you can go vote on...

For now - you would either need to have a Gallery control for each type of table, or, you could employ the use of a collection to gather the information for the Gallery in a common schema.

Example:

    OnChange action of the ListBox:

         ClearCollect(myCollection,

              Switch(listBox.Selected.Value,

                    "tableA", [dbo].[tableA],

                    "tableB", [dbo].[tableB],

                    etc...

Be VERY careful with this though.  Your issues will start to arise quickly if you start referencing a column that is in one table and not another.

If you run into that situation, you will need to have a much more elaborate collection gathering where you reduce down each table to a common schema.

I hope this is helpful for you.

@RandyHayes

I'm afraid thats where that falls short. Only the common columns appear in the available fields to select.

It seems i'll have to create an individual screen for each table. This really needs addressing in the next update as i'm sure there are many admins who would like have a dynamic gallery to display table data from a list.

Thanks.

@ajennings1

You might not have to make individual screens as much as individual Galleries or Tables.  Those you could hide or show based on the selected table in the list.

Really just depends on your design.

That seems like the best option. I was wondering if you could expand on that method?

For example, I have added galleries for a number of tables and set their visibilities to false. Each of my gallaries are named exactly the same as my ListBox1 items i.e. table names. If I used a statement on the OnSelect property of ListBox1 to something like:

Set(tableName,ListBox1.Selected.Value);

If(tableName = "Table1", Table1.Visible = true,

tableName = "Table2", Table2.Visible = true,

tableName = "Table3", Table3.Visible = true,

tableName = "Table4", Table4.Visible = true,

etc..

This is not a great solution as there are over 70 tables therefore over 70 galleries on my screen. Do you think it would be possible to bind the tableName variable to the Gallery in order to set the visibility based on the ListBox selection?

Thanks.

@ajennings1

You will not be able to set the visible property of a control that way.

Also, I wouldn't bother with a variable for this...with that many galleries, it's just going to confuse things.  Use the listbox as your variable.

So, instead, you need your Visible property to be set to a formula that will determine it's true or false nature.

So, in your Gallery Visible property (let's take Table1" for example), you would set the formula to this:

   (ListBox1.Selected.Value="Table1")

This will evaluate to true if the selected listbox item is "Table1", false if not - and, as such, the Gallery will be visible or not based on that logic.
