Adding icon as navbar element instead of text

Hi everyone,

I want to change my navbar element to a bootstrap icon.

I achieved that wiht jQuery, but wonder if there is no smarter solution.

Otherwise I would have to add the code to each page instead of changing one condition.

Just inserting the icon into the pagename does not wokr as it is displayed as text, not recognized as svg.

In the end I want to have something like that:

Hi @Fubar ,

thanks for the hint. I really guess this is the intended function for my case but is does not seem to work pretty well.

The URL doesn't fetch web urls neither webfiles I created. Once selected the box wiht display image online it gets what to do but does not display the image. If anybody has a solution to that, I would like to know.

My approach now was to adjust the header and add one if condition to check for the page I want to have the icon for. This is my code which at least creates something like the picture. Setting the svg width and height to 20 makes it appear smoother. At least when using bootstrap icons.

Hi @Lucas001

You can either do a simple check using CSS (aka conditional CSS)  and switch icons or check the logic via jQuery and change the CSS class dynamically.

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/CSS_conditional_rules

or you can use something like below

:checked { /* if */ }
:not(:checked) { /* else */ }

[data-attr="true"] { /* if */ }
[data-attr="false"] { /* elseif */ }
:not([data-attr]) { /* else */}

Feel free to use jQuery and switch CSS classes also.

https://copyprogramming.com/howto/if-and-else-statement-check-if-has-class

Hope it helps.

There is actually a bug in the Header web template.

The class option as per @Dean_Warren should work, but the logic is missing a liquid else just after that class bit

this section of liquid in the Header web template is what makes Dean's class option work

{% if link.image %}
 {% if link.image.url %}
   {% if link.image.url.first == '.' %}
       <span class='{{ link.image.url | split:'.' | join }}' aria-hidden='true'></span>
   {% endif %}

but there is a logic bug which means it won't render the image to the width and heights specified if it is a web file image as there is not an else to the .first == '.'

It should be something like

{% if link.image.url.first == '.' %}
  <span class='{{ link.image.url | split:'.' | join }}' aria-hidden='true'></span>
{% else %}
   <img
     src='{{ link.image.url | escape }}'
     alt='{{ link.image.alternate_text | default:link.tooltip | escape }}'
     {% if link.image.width %}
       width='{{ link.image.width | escape }}'
     {% endif %}
     {% if link.image.height %}
       height='{{ link.image.height | escape }}'
     {% endif %}
{% endif %}

If you add the missing else, it will render a web file image eg. can use "/logo.png"

(the IMG tag I have used is what is several lines down in the Header template)

Edit: suspect some Dev edited the Web Template and added the liquid endif after the  span class, when it should be further down (the existing else makes no sense - as it is basically saying if there is no url then create an img using the nonexistant url)

Use the Portal/Power Pages Management App. in the Web Link for the menu item in question (found in the Web Link Set that the menu is using) there is a section at the bottom for referencing an Image and a checkbox to display only the image.

(Haven't used it myself, but If it doesn't work out of the box, you may need to make changes to the Header web template)

Hi @Fubar ,

thanks for the hint.

Hi,

You can just add the bootstrap icon class as the weblink image, e.g.

Image URL:   ".bi .bi-cart4"

Image Height: 20

Image Width: 20

Using the portal pages management app as @Fubar  noted (also my screenshot below)

and if you tick "display image only" the web link name doesn't display. My example yields:

Dean_Warren_1-1701181877344.png

This works becuase the liquid code in header.html  assumes that if [Image URL] starts with a "." then Image URL is actually a class reference.

Of course the Icon class has to be loaded so you might need this in your html ...

<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/bootstrap-icons@1.3.0/font/bootstrap-icons.css">

Hi @ragavanrajan@Dean_Warren,

thanks for your answers. Will try those things.

Next question would be on how to change that icon on each page dynamically when someething is added to the cart. Currently I can only think of JQuery and a manual modification. Any suggestions on that?

Hi @Lucas001

You can either do a simple check using CSS (aka conditional CSS)  and switch icons or check the logic via jQuery and change the CSS class dynamically.

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/CSS_conditional_rules

or you can use something like below

:checked { /* if */ }
:not(:checked) { /* else */ }

[data-attr="true"] { /* if */ }
[data-attr="false"] { /* elseif */ }
:not([data-attr]) { /* else */}

Feel free to use jQuery and switch CSS classes also.

Hope it helps.

There is actually a bug in the Header web template.

The class option as per @Dean_Warren should work, but the logic is missing a liquid else just after that class bit

this section of liquid in the Header web template is what makes Dean's class option work

{% if link.image %}
 {% if link.image.url %}
   {% if link.image.url.first == '.' %}
       <span class='{{ link.image.url | split:'.' | join }}' aria-hidden='true'></span>
   {% endif %}

but there is a logic bug which means it won't render the image to the width and heights specified if it is a web file image as there is not an else to the .first == '.'

It should be something like

{% if link.image.url.first == '.' %}
  <span class='{{ link.image.url | split:'.' | join }}' aria-hidden='true'></span>
{% else %}
   <img
     src='{{ link.image.url | escape }}'
     alt='{{ link.image.alternate_text | default:link.tooltip | escape }}'
     {% if link.image.width %}
       width='{{ link.image.width | escape }}'
     {% endif %}
     {% if link.image.height %}
       height='{{ link.image.height | escape }}'
     {% endif %}
{% endif %}

Hi @ragavanrajan, @Fubar,

thanks for your support. I will go with the suggestion of @ragavanrajan to implement the change of the icon.

Anyway that issue @Fubar found would be something for the product team to fix I guess.

Thanks a lot guys.
