Adding item fields together and storing in a variable.

I am currently writing a flow that will pull items from a list (TripLedger). the steps in my flow are as follows:

1- Grab all items from TripLedger that are:

    1a- unpaid ledger entries (idc about the paid ones as they are alread paid)

    2a- sort them by user FullName (String column type not a person/contact object)

2- Create vairable needed to cycle thorugh the ledger entries and add them together

    2a- var ListLength set to length(outputs('Get_items')?['body/value'])

    2b- var CurrentUser set to the first user's name by first(outputs('Get_items')?['body/value'])?['FullName']

    2c- var CurrentIndex set to 0 (this is used as an exit case in a loop later in the flow. when current = size)

    2d- var Current?Amout set to 0 (this is used as the currenter persons total and is reset when the next name is different)

3- Now that the set is done I need to create an apply-to-each to loop throught the filtered and sorted data from SP.

    3a- If currentUser = item()?['FullName'] then we know the entry is still for this user so I add it to total an increment counter.

    3b- If currentUser != item()?['FullName'] then I know i need to swap to next user by saving the total I just calculated and then resetting all variables to the current users total and name etc. Also increment count again.

    3c- Do this until ListLength = CurrentIndex. This will give me all the users listed out with their respective outstanding totals from the ledger list.

This flow also marks these entries as paid and adds the total for each person to a stored SP column that tracks the users yearly total (month1total + month2total + etc)

The issues comes when I am trying to add the 2 columns and store it in a variable. Here is my code and the error I get:

add(item()?['TripMileageCost'], item()?['TripExtraCost'])

TripMileageCost = total reimbursement owed for mileage cost on this entry/trip

TripExtraCost = total reimbursement owed for items other than mileage. (image of receipts are also saved to the item)

I am hoping that I dont have to make 2 variable using compose then add those variable as this flow is already getting long and complicated as it is. If i can make this syntax work somehow it would be nice! Thank you in advance!

Error Message I get when testing the flow:

InvalidTemplate. Unable to process template language expressions in action 'Increment_CurrentAmount_by_(Mileage_and_Extra)' inputs at line '0' and column '0': 'The template language function 'add' expects its first parameter to be an integer, a float or a decimal number. The provided value is of type 'Null'. Please see https://aka.ms/logicexpressions#add for usage details.'.

I ended up changing from using item()?['FieldName'] syntax to just using the build it SP options to select what I wanted.Screenshot 2023-02-03 at 11.58.08 AM.png

 Im not sure why this is any different and would still love to know if anyone can explain what the differnce between these two methods is?

I went ahead and tried to make 2 variables holding the values from the current item that i want to add together. I then use the add function to try to add the floats stored in these 2 variables. This also causes and error. I originally thought it was due to my SP list having blank columns values so I changed all blanks to $0 instead of 'null'.

This is the error produced now:

BadRequest. The variable 'TempMileageTotal' of type 'Float' cannot be set to null or empty value.

Both columns in SP that I am trying to add have a value for all items. No null values in the SP list for these 2 columns at all. The first column I did like this (exact same code just different column name. the column type is the same for both of these, the code is the same except for the names and yet the output of the first one works and the 2nd throws a data type exception due to a null value from somewhere.

Screenshot 2023-02-03 at 11.48.50 AM.png

set TempExtraTotal - item()?['TempExtraCosts']

set TempMileageTotal - item()?['TempMileageCosts']

increment CurrentAmount - add(variables('TempExtraTotal'),variables('TempMileageTotal'))

Thanks again!
