Create Site Column in Communication Site

Hi,  I'm currently looking at the automation of creation of Site Columns and Content Types in a Comms site.

I've seen a few other posts using the HTTP Send a request to SharePoint trigger and they look promising, so I've tried using the endpoint /_api/web/fields and then a site column schema of this:

{ '__metadata': { 'type': 'SP.Field' },
'Title': 'CustomRESTField2',
'InternalName': 'CustomRESTField2',
'FieldTypeKind': 1,
'Required': 'false',
'EnforceUniqueValues': 'false',
'StaticName': 'CustomRESTField2',
'Group': 'MyCustom Columns',
'Hidden': 'false' }

I'm finding the flow runs successfully, but in my site neither the Site Column nor the new group I created seem to exist.

Is there something I'm doing wrong?  My headers are:

accept: application/json;odata:verbose

content-type: application/json;odata:verbose

X-RequestDigest : form digest value

the flow runs successfully and I get an object output from flow that looks correct, however the Site Column is nowhere to be found!

Any suggestions kindly appreciated!  Thanks!

I was able to create a list column using below flow, try at your end if this suits you:

Body content

{
'__metadata':{ 'type': 'SP.FieldText' },
'FieldTypeKind' : 2,
'Title' : 'Country',
'MaxLength': '25'
}

@AndyB1000 I even tried the creating site column and associating it with a content type group.

{
'__metadata':{ 'type': 'SP.FieldText' },
'FieldTypeKind' : 2,
'Title' : 'Country1',
'MaxLength': '25',
'Group': 'TestContentType'
}

Here is the conclusion :

1 - I think we cannot create a site column and add in a group

2 - The flow runs successfully but even I cannot find the newly created column

Yes it seems that way, I wonder if there's anyone out there who has successfully done this!

I need my columns to specifically be Site Columns as they will eventually be used as managed properties in SharePoint search.  I'll have to see what other methods I can use for automation, thanks.

@AndyB1000

I tried using below and it works for me.

Method: POST

Uri: _api/web/fields

Your accept and content-type headers are wrong. Use this:

accept: application/json;odata=verbose

content-type: application/json;odata=verbose

Body:

{
	'__metadata': {
		'type': 'SP.Field'
	},
	'Title': 'CustomRESTField2',
	'FieldTypeKind': 1,
    'Group': 'My Custom Columns'
}

It is creating a site column in SharePoint site successfully. However it is not showing it on "Site Columns" page in SharePoint. You can verify if your site column is created or not using URL in below format:

https://tenant.sharepoint.com/_layouts/15/fldedit.aspx?field=CustomRESTField2

Output:

Site column in PAutomate.PNG

So the column exists but then is not viewable within the SharePoint site?  There must be some way of making it usable/viewable within the UI as well.  I wonder if the schema has a property which will help here, I'd ideally like my clients to be able to administer the column in the final solution should they need to with the UI.  I should probably mark your answer as the solution @ganeshsanap  - but I'm going to push for the reason why it is hidden.

Create a new field just like before.

To add field to view, I have hard-coded, you can make it dynamic as requried.

_api/web/lists/getbytitle('PTO')/Views/getbyId('F9BCA4C2-952C-49A4-92CF-AD5653F9674B')/ViewFields/AddViewField('Country3')

Hope this helps, please accept as solution 🙂

Afraid not, I need my client to be able to alter the column if needed via Site Settings.  Although it may be viewable when added to the list, I need it to be updateable in the SharePoint UI (via either Site Columns or Content Types)  before it is added to a list or library.

Does anyone know why it is not viewable in the UI after being created in Flow?  Does this happen with other methods of programmatic creation? (i.e. Powershell/REST API Javascript)
