Creating automatic email sending 5days before public holiday

Hello, 

I have this problem to tackle, can somebody please help how to turn the "date" data type into the integer for dividing it? 

Where the pseudo-code is: 

If todaysdate = publicholidaydate - 5 
then send email: ...

If todaysdate = publicholidaydate - 1
then send email: ...
