Display values based on the categories in model driven apps

Friends,

I want to create a rules in my model driven app for set of categories.

Ex:

1. If i select category as Games. The corresponding subcategories Card games, Dice games should prepopulate and hide the remaining values.

2. Similarly Select Category as Buildings. Subcategories Cathedral & Torcello should only display in the dropdown list.

Can you please advise how this can be achieved. I've tried Business rule but it is not working as expected.

Both Category and Sub-Categories are Choice columns.

Hi @skolisetti,

For Choice fields, you will need to resort to using JavaScript to achieve your needs. Here is a sample on how to do this. Note that its a bit older and using Xrm.Page is deprecated, so you'd you want to instead use getFormContext()

The second option is to change your Category/Subcategories to Tables instead, establishing a relationship between your category and subcategory tables. Then when you add the lookup to the form you can filter based on the parent through configuration. An example of this is described here.

I would highly recommend the second option because you can achieve your scenario through configuration and no-code. Another reason is that based on your categories and subcategories, it seems like you may add more over time. If this list changes a lot, then using a Choice is undesirable because every time you want to add more items to the list you need to modify the Choice to add more options. It is also difficult to retire options.

Hope this helps.

Hi @skolisetti,

Power Automate flows run in the background and won't work for this scenario where values need to be filtered in real time within the user interface.

Hi @skolisetti,

To start with

Open Model Driven apps --> Click Gear icon on top --> Select Advance settings --> once page loaded Navigate to Customisation--> Select customize the system --> Expand Entities --> Select the Entity where you want to perform your filtering operations --> Expand that selected Entity --> Click Forms--> Open Main Form in the List--> Click form properties at the top --> Click Add then Add the JavaScript if already exists or Select new to create a new one

function hideOptions() {
if (Xrm.Page.ui.getFormType() == 1) {
var pickList = Xrm.Page.getAtteibute("new_consolidateoption");// Main field like Games etc
var childList= Xrm.Page.getControl("new_child");
If(pickList.getValue() == 1)// Games
childList.Remove(2); // 2 is nothing but Optionset value
}
else if(pickList.getValur() == 2){
// Perform other option
}
}

Prakash thanks for your response. I dont see the properties in the main form can you advise on this ? PFA

Hi @skolisetti,

Please mark as Answer if its helpful

Ram this is helpful.

But after selecting the Category from one to another the values in the Sub-Categories list are not resetting, unless we refresh the page.. can you advise on this ?

Ex:

1. If i select category as Games. The corresponding subcategories Card games, Dice games are displayed

2. Similarly if i select category as Buildings in the same session/form. Subcategories Cathedral & Torcello are not displayed unless i refresh the page and select the category again as Buildings.

Issue2:

For the first time when user loads the form the "Subcategories" list should be empty without showing any values unless user select the Category

Hi @skolisetti,

Then you are near to it 🙂

For reset or in onchange you need to reinsert the value again

var low = {value : 100000000, text : "Low"};

var childList= Xrm.Page.getControl("new_child");

childList.addOption(low);

When we show subcategories  Filter we need to set and reset values by using add and Remove option.
