Hard mapping not working

Dear friends,

I have a parent - child table which have a connection of 1:N relationship. And in Classic View, I have set the mapping, one of it is a field with same name between the parent and child. This is what we sometime called it hard mapping if I'm not mistaken. I've published the setting.

What could be the reason when the hard map was not working, means I check the field in parent has changed but the child record has not change ?

Thanks

Hi @Axal ,

Sorry, the Mappings do not work this way.  These are only when you create new records it will map from the parent to the child record but it will not affect updates.  You would need to have a "Flow" or something else to populate the child record from the parent if you want this to happen.

Another Possible Option

If you are always keeping the child the same value as the parent then you may want to just add a Quick View form on the child to show the parent information and then add the field from the parent to the views instead of keeping as a column in the child record.

Hope this helps.  Please accept if answers your question or Like if helps in any way.

Hi @dpoggemann ,

Thanks, I didn't know it is only for insert  new record.

Well actually my intention is like this:

1. The parent table has 1 field named : "Posted"

2. I have a form for the child table, when the parent's field "Posted" = Yes, I want to lock all the field in the form.

3. Currently, to lock the fields in this child form, I'm using Business Rules, looking at the "Posted" field inside the child table in hope that it will copied from its parent.

Is there any way to make this happen ? I mean beside make a Flow to change the Posted field child table when Posted field in parent has changed.  In business rule we cannot lookup to other table (the parent table), right ?

Thanks,

Hello @Axal,

You can find my blog here for making all fields Read only using JS

Hi @Axal ,

You might want to consider putting the child table record into an "Inactive" status, could be something like "Posted" which you could setup as an inactive status.  This will make all the fields read only.  Not sure if this fits your needs but wanted to mention as an option.

Hope this helps.  Please accept if answers your question or Like if helps in any way.

Hi @dpoggemann ,

Thanks for the suggestion and noted that. But still the main issue now is still I need to update all the records in the child table, either it is my "Posted" field or Active status, I still need to reach and look up to the parent table first and then update all the records.

I was first thought that it is supposed to be easy, turn out I was very wrong.

I have tried:

1. The hard mapping, not working

2. Real-time workflow, not working

3. Have to consider Power automate (but I have to consider the price added), also the logic a bit excessive for it is searching the whole record in parent table first, check which records are Posted and then loop through the child table.

Honestly, all I need is the Posted value in parent table to be copied to its child, only that. 😂

Thanks.

Hi @rampprakash

So about this JavaScript, if in my Child form, I will add Subgrid containing the field "Posted" of the parent, will JavaScript able to grab that info and make all the control in the form to disabled like in your blog ?

Thanks

Hi @Axal ,

Since this is on the "Many" side of a 1:Many relationship you will not be able to do through a Real-Time workflow or through Mapping rules as you have found.

The Power Automate Flow would be pretty basic:

1.  Trigger for flow is update of the Posted column on the parent record

2.  Retrieve all child records where Parent is the record from #1

3.  Update the field on the child record based on the Parent value.

Hi @dpoggemann ,

On top of it all, actually the target is only that my form is the child form, which is what you said as the "many" side, that I want to lock / disabled all the input / control whenever the Posted field in its parent table is "Yes"

May I ask how to achieve it actually ? I'm very sorry, but I do am confuse about this part. So when it is possible (and how, basically), I think the updates of child tables is unnecessary.

Afraid to make another confusion, what I mean by "child" form is, the form will only displaying one record on that table still, not to say the form will then show many records. It will still display one record at a time, but this record has its parent record which need to look up first to identify this form is editable or not.

So, it's like a list or Sales Order Line, and when we open / double click it, then we will see all the fields of this Sales Order Line, but as this Sales Order Line has its Header, it will need to look at that header table, one field only, "Posted", when it is true then this Sales Order Line form will be non editable.

Really appreciate all your patience with me. 😇

Hi @Axal

The following is a simple flow I just created that shows you the core process I would take.  You would want to add what makes sense for you.  I have a Header and Child table.  On the Header field I have a "Yes/No" field called Posted but the field name is "cr2e3_posted".  On the child table I have a lookup to the parent named Header and the field name is cr2e3_header.

The flow below changed the status of the child records to an "Inactive" status which automatically made all fields "read only".  You will see the one trick on the getting child records based on parent lookup column you need to put underscore in front of the field name and add _value to end (see the list rows step).
