Moving data from Dev to Test - Dataverse

I have a solution developed on one Dev environment that include pre-populated tables (reference tables) and test data.

As I'm moving this to another test environment, I'm trying to re-import a complex data model (with a number of foreign keys) from DEV to TEST.

I'm getting really frustrated since there is NO documentation how to import data with foreign keys and the import functionality from dataverse doesn't help.

I will appreciate any tutorial , guide or proven approach.

Hello @amarotta,

Do you want to move data or you want to move customization?

If yes, then

1. Navigate to https://make.powerapps.com

2. Select the Respective Environment

3. select solution

4. Create a new Solution and add all the Components which you need to move from Dev to Test

5. Click Publish All Customization and Click Export and Import the same to your Dev Environment

If you want all the Data And Customization from DEV to Test then you can follow below

1. Navigate to https://admin.microsoft.powerplatform.com/environments

2. Select the Environment in your case its DEV environment

3. Open it and Click COPY and select the TEST environment

4. Click Done then it will automatically copy all the data and customization from DEV to TEST

If you want to move only Data then

1. Navigate to https://make.powreapps.com

2. Click Gear Icon at the top

3. Select Advance Settings

4. Select DataManagement

5. Select Import.

6. Import your CSV format and select the respective entities.

Hello @amarotta,

Then there is no other way you need to user Excel Export Import Operations only, if the solution is also not there then we need to user Solution Export Import only.

Let me know if you have any queries.

Hi @amarotta ,

First - When you export the solution and import it from dev environment in one tenant to test environment in another tenant , all the complex relationship would be taken care.

What is the volume of data that you are trying to move to the new environment? Is it more than 20K,

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/admin/import-data-all-record-types

In that case we can do it programmatically. Follow the reference link for step by step instruction below,

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powerapps/developer/data-platform/import-data

If the volume of data is less than 20K ,my suggestion to get the data is ..

1. Export Data to excel from test environment with all required columns. (In your case it will be blank)

2. Export Data to excel from dev environment with same set of columns.

3. Copy data from excel in step 2 to excel in step 1.

4. Import the sheet again in test environment.

Here you have the over head of moving the master entities first.
