Is it possible to register only one app for all environments under an Azure tenant for ALM process?

Hi all,

As I understand, to run ALM pipeline at DevOps in order to release solution to different environments,

we need to setup app registration for each environment.

Imagine a company have more than 15 environments, I'm wondering whether it's possible to just register one app at azure AD and be able to run the ALM for all environments under this azure tenant?

Please kindly provide references along with your precious insights!

Thanks a lot!!!

Hello @Anonymous,

Yes, using 1 Azure AD app registration for multiple environments in ALM is possible.

In the Power Platform Admin Center, you will have to create an application user with the Azure AD app and the appropriate security role in each environment following these instructions.

Hello @Anonymous,

1. Out of the box, the security role with the least privileges would be the System Customizer role (you might have to add the Create privilege for the Plug-In Assembly table, otherwise the import might result in an error). Alternatively, you could build your own security role with even less privileges. You'll have to assign privileges for the relevant components in the Customization tab, and some other privileges.

2.  Exactly, that's how we do it within our tenant.

Hello @Anonymous,

Sorry, I thought you were asking about permissions in Dataverse... According to the official Microsoft documentation, you should use these API permissions for your app registration in Azure:

 Dynamics CRM --> Delegated --> user_impersonation

You'll then need to grant admin consent.

There is also a script by Microsoft you can use to create the app registration.

Hi @joe_hannes_col ,

Thanks for your reply,

1. do you know also the required permissions for this Azure app registration if I use the PP build tool to run ALM? I checked MS doc Microsoft Power Platform Build Tools for Azure DevOps - Power Platform | Microsoft Learn and Use single-tenant server-to-server authentication (Microsoft Dataverse) - Power Apps | Microsoft Lea... but it's not documented at MSFT which permissions are required...

2. so basically after 1 app registered at Azure, I can assign this app with required roles at each power platform environment, then create separated service connections at DevOps, before running the ALM pipelines, correct?

thanks in advance for your valuable input!

Thanks @joe_hannes_col  for your prompt help!!

I would like to clarify my first question: which API permissions are required for this app registration at Azure portal...is it only require Dynamics CRM permission and Graph user.read , or should also include DevOps, PowerApps Runtime Service, and PowerApps-Advisor (Analysis All) permissions??

I read couple blogs and they include different API permissions..
