Struggling to understand what I need to deploy an App using a local SQL Store

Hi there, new to PowerApps...

I have managed to setup a gateway to our local SQL server and I can use it in Trial environments and my personal environment.  However, I cannot access the gateway in the default environment for our organization.  Searching the web I see posts saying that the only place you can access local data is from the default environment???  The exact opposite of what I am experiencing.

What I am really trying to do is test deploying/sharing an app to our end users.  I cannot do this in my personal environment.  I can do it in the Trial environment but it's going to end soon.  I cannot convert the trial to production or create a production as I do not have enough capacity?  For some reason I need 1 GB but I have zero and no way to purchase additional?

I have not purchased licenses yet as I am still trialing this.  Plus, from what I read, each license gets 50 MB of data???  So, 1000/50 = 20 licenses before I can build a production environment???  My first app is only going to be used by 1 person!!!!

Needless to say, I am confused!  🙂   Hopefully someone can point me how to develop and deploy an app to a single user for a reasonable amount of money?

Thanks

Re: Struggling to understand what I need to deploy an App using a local SQL Store

Hi @SeeSide ,

The region of each environment can be found in https://admin.powerplatform.microsoft.com/environments as below.

I think you should first go to On-premises data gateway client to check  which environment is your gateway installed in. In default, the gateway is installed in the default environment. If your gateway is not in default environment and their regions are different, you'd better to install a new gateway in your default environment.

The Storage capacity shows 0GB because trial and developer environment do not count against capacity. (From Storage capacity tab ). Effective April 1, 2019 , all production environments with or without Common Data Service will consume at least 1GB capacity.

That means you need at least 1GB of capacity.

However, the CDS of Organization base Default Storage Capacity is 10 GB, and the default capacity for CDS per PowerApps Plan 2 license is 200 MB.

So don't worry, even if you don't use CDS, the default storage capacity and additional storage entitlements are enough for you to create environment.

Re: Struggling to understand what I need to deploy an App using a local SQL Store

Hi @SeeSide ,

The gateway is supported in all environments since Oct 2019. Please check this: Support gateways in all environments

Ensure the region where you installed the gateway matches the region of your Power Automate/Power Apps environment.

50MB is Common Data Service database capacity, not the total data capacity can be used in app. Generally, there is no capacity limitation of SQL(other data sources) to use in PowerApps.

If your CDS database capacity is full, you can purchase the Power Apps and Power Automate capacity add-on:

 - Common Data Service Database Capacity (1GB) $40 per month

 - Common Data Service File Capacity (1GB) $2 per month

 - Common Data Service Log Capacity (1GB) $10 per month

Best regards,

Sik

Thanks @v-siky-msft, your assistance is very much appreciated!

You mention:

The first statement is certainly good news. So, since I can see our Gateway in the trial and my personal environments which are setup in Region Canada, this must mean our corporate default environment is setup in a different region?  How do I see what region it's setup in?  It doesn't show in admin.powerapps.com or admin.powerplatform.microsoft.com?  Or at least I haven't found it yet.  🙂

Assuming this is the case, would you recommend I try and have the default environment moved to Canada region?  Or, do I setup a second gateway, that is in the same region (?) that the default environment is in?

As for the storage.  When I try and create a production environment it says I need 1 GB of storage.  This is true whether I tell it to create a CDS database for the environment or not.   Is this the same storage as the CDS storage you mention below?

Since we are on trial licenses my storage all shows as zero.

If we purchase a small number of licenses will we have enough capacity to create a production environment or should I budget an additional $40/month for 1 GB of CDS data?  Seems odd, since we are not planning on using CDS at this point in time?

Or, do I simply fix the issue with the Gateway and the default environment and deploy production apps there?  Which seems wrong from what I have read?  The default environment is supposed to be more of a learning/prototype environment?

Thanks again for all your assistance?   Steep learning curve!  🙂

On-premises gateways are specific to a single environment.  So although gateways are now supported for environments other than the default, they have to be installed for each environment. Since yours was installed for the dev environment you'll need to install another for your default production environment.
