Cognitive Search Support in Power Portals

I have a customer who asked for a demo of a Power Portal with Cognitive Search. They want to index documents and images in blob storage using document cracking and OCR skills. When we set out to build the demo I was dismayed to find that support only exists in canvas apps and not portals. Additionally, it is cumbersome and confusing for citizen developers to have to create a custom connector for the integration.
