Generate app using the tablet layout

Currently you can only use the Tablet Layout when creating a blank app.  Can you please include this layout when generating an app from a data source?  I really think this should be a high priority.  The option to switch between layouts would be nice too.

It takes a long time to build an app from scratch, particularly as the gallery control in a blank app does not seem to find fields/columns in the data source (I've updated the Items formula, but it cannot find the columns, despite having used them successfully in the same app generated using Phone Layout).

Status: Planned

This feature idea is actively being discussed and we see the value it will bring.  If as part of it we were to support incrementally adding entities to an existing app with the predefined templating of the current App from Data, would that be useful?

Hi everyone, this is something we have been wanting to add to Power Apps for some time. It is very encouraging to see the support from the community for this feature. I am optimistic that you will hear more about this in a few months. Please stay tuned!

Oh my gosh!

I can't believe that this is not supported. I'm really new to PowerApps and just assumed that I just wasn't finding this feature.

But apparently it doesn't exist. How is that possible? Like other have mentioned, if we want to use this for internal purposes, it will be viewed on a screen and not on a phone.

Why not allow all that nice functionality for tablet layout as well? Or allow you to change it later on?

This is frustrating.

@WorkHard  Ditto!  It is a year since your comment and I still can't agree more!

If Power Apps is the InfoPath replacement, we need to at least have the tablet option available for creating SharePoint connected app.

Realistically, if you are creating an app for your company, what percentage of your employees will be using it on their phone?  Maybe after hours or in transit?  But the majority of the time it would be used on desktop.

Just adding to this so that it is clear that people really do want this feature.

Oi MS Team! Are you folks asleep at the wheel... something asked for 3 million years ago and still no word from you regarding this. Shocking but expected

Hello,

Is there any news on this? Is this something included in 2022 release wave 2?

Many Thanks,

Hello @JosephShum , @starwispy  @mkoscielski  @thomas_praxis @aperea2539

I believe I have found a work around to this issue whilst Microsoft eventually fix this.
1. Locate your tablet layout app in https://make.powerapps.com/ , right-click and select details.
2. Copy the web link URL.
3. Paste in the URL in a text editor and put a parameter in like this "?RecordID=YourIDHere" at the end of the URL - this we can use for testing that its working.
4. Edit the app and on the App OnStart property get a variable to hold the RecordID value:
Set(varRecordID, Value(Param("RecordID")));

This will look for the parameter RecordID in the URL and stor it in the varRecordID global variable.
5. Edit your PowerBi report and put in a button that points to the URL concatenated with the RecordID in your dataset.
6. In the App Update your filter conditions where relevant where varRecordID = dataset.RecordID

You will now have a PowerBi report with a clickable button that passes a unique record ID to the tablet app.
On start up the tablet app will store the record ID in a global variable that you can use to filter your conditions.

Cheers,

K

@Kernow , you are talking about something completely different.

You are talking about deep links.

But this idea is for the ability to use the built-in template to start building an app from a datasource (SharePoint for example) in tablet/desktop mode instead of phone mode. Right now, when you create an app using an existing datasource, it always generates it in phone mode (tiny screen) with no ability to switch to tablet after it's created so you either have to start the app from scratch (not using a template that sets up a ton of things for you automatically) or hack the .app datafile to change the layout.

Hi @WorkHard ,

I fully understand the issue and as I said its a work-around until Microsoft can resolve this issue.

Many Thanks,
