Making the Invisible "Visible to the Designer"

Can invisible items not be invisible on the design surface? Maybe just be shown in red brackets or something to indicate it is invisible in run state.

I'm not crazy about the fact that when I set a control to be invisible, it actually becomes invisible on my design surface. I want to set it as invisible for the run state (but not in design state). This complicates positioning items (which is really my priority for asking for this), and it also prevents me from adding notes to myself (see screen shot below). The notes to myself are set to invisible - but an end user will never see them; I use them for troubleshooting values being returned and for general reminders during testing.

Thank you for considering this ask.

Funny statusing my own idea. LOL

This is by design. By creating a wysiwyg design surface, the designer can validate configuration without having to run the app. Remember that the ALT-key will surface everything on the design surface, and the Advanced Property Panel on the right will have all controls available within the dropdown.

Thank you,

Audrie

It would still be great to be able to add Design and Review Notes, like you can with PowerPoint, that are only available from within the designer, but not packaged with the app when it goes to production of course.

I understand the Advanced property panel settings but this gets old real fast, turning the setting on and off,

Plus adding hidden fields with notes clutters and adds weight to your app.

I tried the alt key trick but it doesn't seem to work in the Web based designer, at least not with my Mac, I'll give this a try on my Windows machine.

@KC Things have gotten better now with the new Screen Explorer, which makes it easy to locate and select invisible items. Link to more on that here:

https://powerapps.microsoft.com/en-us/tutorials/add-configure-controls/#find-and-select-a-screen-or-...

Another option: As a best practice, I also add a debugger screen to the back of my app, which the consumer cannot see because they can't navigate to it, but the designers can see when making changes. Here is a screen shot of how I do that....let me know if this makes sense.

Hi Audrie,

Agreed on your points, the Screen Explorer is fantastic and the debugger screen is a great tip.

I was refering to Design notes should be a feature built into the editor not the screens your developing.

The extra screen still gets loaded onto the users device. This may not be a big issue for some apps but adding extra weight that a user will never use to the app just seems odd to me.

But with the new Version control I guess you could have a dev version, and a production version minus the debug screen, not ideal but could work.

Thank you Audrie.

@KC points very well taken! I'll keep you posted as we bring these into the roadmap. As always, we appreciate your innovative ideas and patience as we grow the feature set to meet your needs!

Audrie shared a great idea with me which is now incorporated in all of our PowerApps. Her suggestion was to add an additional screen at the end of any PA with no navigational access to this screen.

This is the screen where notes about the PA are listed. For example, the URL, if fields are visible and what they are  along with anything else that would help while working on this PA. Since there is no navigation to this screen, only PA creators would be able to see the notes screen. I love this!
