The new Barcode scanner control is out, and we recommend it to anyone who needs to scan a barcode, QR code or data matrix codes on their mobile devices.
A couple of notes:
Old barcode scanner control has been renamed to Web barcode scanner. It is disabled by default and can be enabled in the experimental features settings. We are keeping it around as it is currently the only way to scan barcodes in a web browser.
The ScanBarcode function has been removed from experimental properties. The function will still work for existing apps, but those apps should be updated to use the new Barcode scanner control. It is the same functionality underneath, and it will store the value for you in the control, so it should be easier to use than the function.
The Qr code could also be used as a database to store info such as an employee in the field working has been to a certain location and completed a daily routine such as cleaning an office they would use their mobile device to scan the QR code and that info can be sent to SharePoint and excel and update work progress.
I just tested the Barcode option with asset coding on stickers in our production factory, as this is available in PA so we can continue to build the PA app for it. The barcode does not read very well on distances greater than 40 cm, or we must print it very big, which is not suitable with the factory. The QR can be read from 1-2 meter, which we like much better. Q: So please let us know when the QR functionality will become available within PA?
Please add QR code reader functionality with PA. Sending QR image to Webservices and returning data from webservices is very flakey. Please include it as QR code reader will be big plus for all mobile apps.
Its been in review since 2016 now we are in 2018, please consider including this now.
Is it possible to insert the 'Windows Launcher scanner' into PA, in stead of the barcode scanner? This suits both QR and barcode and the app is allready designed by MS.
I'm really waiting for this functionallity for asset ID scanning in our factory. (= enterprise buisness !!)
Update: We are have plans for significant re-architecture of the barcode scanner control, to rely on the native device’s APIs for detecting barcodes. We are expecting to complete this work by the summer, at which time we’ll be adding support for QR codes.
