Role-based Views

Author Name: Rodolfo Chavez

Would be beneficial for default entity views to have the option to be overriden at the security role level (like forms).

For example, for Accounts you can only have one default lookup view or search view for all roles in the company. Obviously the desired columns and layout of the result set is going to vary based on the type of user.

Currently, there is no workaround for search views to be different depending on the user's role in the organization.

While this would be useful where a system admin can determine the best choice for a user based on role, don't forget that in 2011 a user can already choose a default view for an entity, including choosing a personal view rather than a system one. So the problem is not as big as it was in CRM4, but it would still be more convenient in some cases to do this system-wide by roles, as long as the end-user could still have control (or allow this to be toggled, a bit like read-only forms - admin chooses if user can deviate from default). I don't think lookups really need to have multiple options - don't forget that for a given lookup field on a form you can choose to use a view other than the regular lookup one, and you can give users control of whether they also want to use a different one again. Search results - maybe, although in the Outlook client a search is done using the current view, so in that environment the user would presumably be using their default view anyway.

Thank you for your suggestion. As Adam points out, there are ways to work around this issue today. We are considering this functionality for a future release of CRM. Anusha Shankar This posting is provided "as is" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

We are just deploying CRM and I can't believe this is not an option!  Please implement.
