Allow for dynamic "file" value for excel "get a row" action

When using the Excel (Business) connector you can currently select the "File" that will be used for the "get row" action at design time.  This works fine if the spreadsheet already exists and you want to continously reference it when you flow is initiated.  However, if you wanted to set up a document library that contained an Excel spreadsheet as a template that a user could edit and save to the library to then have a Flow take action on, you can't.  Specifically, I would like the ability so that either through a manual trigger or when the spreadsheet is new/updated that the spreadsheet file (name, link, whatever is needed) could be used as a dynamic value on the "get row" action so that I could just grab a cell from the newly created spreadsheet and use it in the rest of the flow.

If your file is in Sharepoint, then use the Sharepoint-'Get file metadata using path'

The input parameters can be variables. Get the file id and pass that to the Excel connector.

Hey Guys,

I found a pretty good workaround for this. You can pass the 'File' parameter a GUID. I used the SharePoint trigger 'For a selected file'. The process might be a little different with other triggers but here's the actions I used to obtain the GUID of the file:

  • SharePoint - Get file properties (Pass in the ID value from the trigger)
  • Compose - encodeUriComponent(concat('/',body('Get_file_properties')?['{FullPath}']))
  • SharePoint - Get file metadata (for the file identifier, pass in the output from compose action)
  • Excel Online Business - Get a row (for File, pass in the Id value from Get file metadata action)

Thanks AlisterT

This worked for me!!

  • SharePoint - For a selected file
  • SharePoint - Get file properties
  • Compose - encodeUriComponent(concat('/',body('Get_file_properties')?['{FullPath}']))
  • SharePoint - Get file metadata
  • Excel - Get tables (to get Table id)
  • Apply to each, Excel - List rows present in a table - success!!!!

Thank you!!
