Create a trigger for SharePoint list columns

It would be nice to have a trigger if a certain column in a SharePoint list is modified. For example, if the column "Status" is modified, or if the column "Assigned To" is populated. So we don't have to use the trigger "When an item is created or modified", where you have to create a lot of workaround conditions just to make sure that the column that was updated is what you need.

Status: Completed

Hi all,

Happy to update that this feature is now rolled out to and available for use. The documentation is updated as well:

For more info about how to use this action, see this tutorial: Introducing 'when an item or file modified' trigger and 'Get changes' action

Thank you all for the feedback and please let us know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Chakkaradeep

Thank you @Audrie-MSFT. I have several complex Flows using the workaround conditions described in the initial idea, and I would be happy to help with providing any details you may need on this subject. I have had to make a lot of workarounds in Flow because of this! Please feel free to let me know if I can help in any way. Thanks again.

Regards,

Alex

Power Automate

Hi all,

As the platform today does not support the capability to listen into for a specific column value changes in a given list or library, we are still working on the plans and how we achieve this functionality in SharePoint and thus in Flow. At this moment, I can't make promises on the ETA, but I do want to stress the fact that the product team hears this loud and clear about the urgent need of this feature and we are working towards delivering this feature.

I will post updates as we progress through this work item.

Thanks,

Chaks

Also, some other top voted features, which are very similar to this feature are waiting.

The "Self-Triggering-on-modification-problem" when flow modified an item which triggers the flow (and modify again, and so on):

https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/Flow-Ideas/Disable-Event-Firing-when-Flow-updates-a-SharePoint-l...

Modification-Connector should provide the values which the item had before change:

https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/Flow-Ideas/Modified-trigger-should-give-previous-values-for-fiel...

The need of separated "New or modified" connectors:

https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/Flow-Ideas/Trigger-flow-When-Item-is-Modified-only/idi-p/237883

Most of them are top votes here in flow ideas. All are lacking ETA and solutions. I hope to see all of these soon. I guess that all of them need changes in the same source code and logic of flow, because all need changes in the modification-trigger.

Power Automate

@teqs Yes. The need for separated "New or Modified" triggers are related to one another but I believe we could build specific actions to get version(s) which would give you previous values for a given item or a file.

This should be a thing already

I'm astounded that this is not a thing yet. And no update for over a year. 😞

@Audrie-MSFT , @Chakkaradeep ,

Any updates on this?  The community really needs this functionality. Happy to discuss if you have questions.

Thanks

This is a great idea and I'm here for it.

This idea is a year old, top voted for long time and we are still waiting for a solution.

I personally want to see the solution, because@Chakkaradeep says in the following idea on Page 17 that the MS developer team will also face the issue of "re-triggering flows on item modifications" (when an item modification triggers a flow, which edit the item itself again, e.g. to set the approval state and approval comment, and then re-trigger the modification trigger again), which we are talked about a lot in this idea:

https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/Flow-Ideas/Disable-Event-Firing-when-Flow-updates-a-SharePoint-l...

So, I hope for a new feature for this idea of "Create a trigger for SharePoint list columns" and beside this, also a solution to solve these self-triggering issues.

--> Would be nice, to see that all the high voted flow (and MS forms) ideas would be worked on in general.

@Audrie-MSFT: If something about these topic is not clear or if you or your developer team has questions, simply ask us.

Thank you and best regards
