King’s College London

Take a walk-through a practical example with Matt Gordon - Associate Director (Data & Analytics) to discover how Power BI was used to create a data culture at King’s College London.

King’s College London is one of the top UK universities in the world* and is London’s most central university, with five campuses all based in the capital. Like many universities, King’s had a problem with data silos, and with over 32,000 students and 8,000 plus staff members, the amount of untapped date was enormous. As one staff member put it King’s was ‘data rich, but intelligence poor’. Siloed data also meant King’s was unable to get a clear picture of its operations for strategic planning. So in 2016, to combat this challenge head-on, King’s started using Power BI.

Matt will now go through how King’s College used Power BI to create a data culture that supports a sustainable foundation for predictive analytics and evidence-based decision-making. He will also talk about the valuable lessons learned along the way over the past three years and what the future of reporting looks like for King’s.

  • *QS World University Rankings, 2018-19

The Member Showcase will give an overview of the college’s journey with Power BI and how they’ve been using it to help transform their organizational culture around data and analytics, including:
  • Successes and failures along with lessons learned along the way and showing a range of the Power BI reports they have created.
  • How they developed staff to get through the DAX wall and create good data models.
  • How they’ve used hackathons to encourage adoption and quickly prototype solutions. Over the past three years King’s College has organized seven hackathons involving over 300 staff members.
  • How the program that began with Power BI has developed to include setting up an analytics infrastructure in Azure, including a data lake and a data warehouse.
