Autonumbering Feature

Author Name: PETER WYSS

It is really a strong requirement to have a feature for an "autonumbering" - field...there are solutions out there in the wild, but it would be very nice to have this feature out-of-the-box in Crm.

Status: Completed

Thank you for your feedback. We released this feature in Dynamics 365 (online), version 9.0. Please refer to the following link for more information:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/customer-engagement/developer/create-auto-number-attrib...

 Thanks,

The plugin method doesn't work if you're online or a locked down system as CRM has no record locking so you can get duplicate numbers (if sequential numbering). I have my own workaround with a stored proc and plugin but this isn't ideal

Thank you for your suggestion. We are considering this functionality for a future release of CRM. Mike Carter This posting is provided "as is" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

As a point of reference, AX has an auto-numbering feature (called number sequencing) OOB. Since Dynamics is a big happy family*** maybe it's worth a peak... ***http://www.slideshare.net/murrayfife/the-microsoft-dynamics-family

As a top 5 item on Connect that has been here now for 3 YEARS I disappointed that this still hasn't been addressed in CRM 2015. What is the point of the new "rapid release cadence" if things like this are continuously ignored?

Clearly this is quite a popular suggestions and I also up-voted it as I would love to see it being implemented. However there is a lot of nuances around the comments on how to calculate this number so I thought of pinching my 2 cents. What I would like to see implemented by MSFT is the ability to implement an out of the box solution that would provide me the exact same type of auto-numbering that exists for cases, invoices, orders, etc. No more, no less. The way I envision it, when creating a custom entity the user would have the ability to enable this feature the say way we can enable activities,s queue,s notes, connections, etc. However, it would be unfair to expect MSFT to consider any sort of auto-numbering where the ordinal value would have some sort of lookup/calculation rule which is specific to the customer. For example, the YEAR-MONTH-RANDONUMBER, COUNTRYCODE-YEAR-RANDOMNUMBER. For any similar sort of auto numbering, this what plug-ins are for.

Yet more requests for this, nearly four years on now: https://connect.microsoft.com/dynamicssuggestions/Feedback/Details/1798524

Has this been resolved or not? If yes where can I find addtional information? Michael

Is there any ETA on this feature? I (and apparently many others) have waited a fair while for this feature to be considered. I did not see anything on the "road map" referring to the addition of this feature.Thank you

Yes Please include this feature in next edition of CRM. It saves huge amount of time for the developers/customizers. We have a huge demand to create auto numbers on almost every custom entity that we create. It shouldn't be too difficult for Microsoft to introduce this feature

Hi, This feature is in big demand from clients and expecting to have in near release under Dynamics 365.

One more point to highlight- Currently 'Name' is a primary field which is not usable in many projects as demand is to provide Number or some other field value while viewing under lookup. Can it be possible to custom define which field should be visible under lookup value? This will save lot of time while doing silly customization.
