Issue showing images in email from URL

Hello there,

I am working on a MS Flow in Power Automate that will run once a month and email out a list of new pages on a Sharepoint site. I use Get Files (Properties Only) on the sharepoint and direct it to Site Pages and apply a ODATA filter to show only those added and updated in the last 31 days. This works great, however I am trying to format a HTML table to show the banner image, name and description of the page:

The issue is this works perfectly well in the Web version of Outlook, but not the desktop application. The Banner Image is a direct URL to where the image is stored. I have tried the following steps to no avail:

1) Added data:image/jpeg;base64 to the img tag, this only broke the Web version

2) Split the URL and created a path string to use Get File content using path and then using this file content composed this through base64 and used this, this still didn't work (it took more than 15 minutes to run a test so I cancelled this as with out this step it runs in 7 seconds).

As the banner image will be different for each page, I can not hard fix the file as I would normally so this needs to be possible using the files URL. I have included screen shots of my App and Web Mail to show what I mean:

Hi @Paul_Gibson,

Could you please tell me that how you get this image, show me you complete flow configure?

I think you should use the Get File content using path one more, here is how I achieve this:

vqiaqimsft_0-1645677078121.png

Remember to inset the following expression just behind the "base64,":

outputs('Get_file_content_using_path')?['body'].$content

vqiaqimsft_1-1645677167653.png

Then select the variable from the Dynamics content to the Body within the Email action.

Hi there,

Thank you for your response. The image is the banner image of a Sharepoint page (.aspx files). I use the Get Files (Properties only) option and this returns the banner image as a URL. One would think using this URL with in a HTTP tag of "<img ref=" would work, which is does with the webmail, but it does not with the Outlook app, which a large portion of our company uses. Because this returns a complete string, using the Get File Content Using Path is not as straight forward as this image will be different for every page the original Get Files returns.

I have found a work around, though this is messy and I feel there may be a better solution out there. What I have done is the following:

1: Retrieved the URL as originally intented.

2: Split this URL by "/" so I can get the required components of it

3: Composed a string with the last four elements found since the Get Files Content by path option requires you to pick the parent sharepoint so will only accept the back end of the URL Path to entered manually

4: Take this and compose it to Base64

5: Use this final result to create the HTML

Again this works, but it involves a whole lot more steps then I feel it should, especially when the Outlook apps should accept HTML Images via URLs as I have seen if the email was composed with in Outlook to include the image, when inspecting the HTML side of the email received, it shows the <img src=tag and then URL.

Hi there @v-qiaqi-msft ,

Firstly I am not sure why you have marked my question as Resolved when it is not. I am aware of using Get Image From File but that is not what I am asking. So let me try to explain again. I have a share point that has a bunch of pages (it's a newsletter sharepoint). I use the Get Files (properties only) and point this to the Site Pages directory and using this data with oData filtering, I pull back all pages that were modified with in the last 31 days.

Paul_Gibson_0-1646382672729.png

With in this data, there is a Dynamic variable called "Banner Image URL". I want to use this URL to display the image in a email so that is shows with in the Outlook App. Using "<IMG SRC" works for emails viewed in the Webmail version of Outlook, but our organization mostly uses local installs of the Outlook App. As this pulls several pages (in some cases this could be as many as 30 a month), all with different banner images, possibly saved in different folders on the sharepoint, I need to be able to use the URL to get this image, and Get Files by Path is no good as you can not paste a complete URL in there as it requires you to pick the parent Sharepoint separately.

Hopefully I have made myself clear this time.

Hi@Paul_Gibson! I am facing the same issue... is yours resolved? if yes kindly share the solution.

Best regards,

Hi There,

I have had to do a work around for this to work. I have done this by adding a custom field on my SharePoint which is accessible via the Page Details section when adding a new news article. I then populate this with a direct URL pointing to the image required for that article. I can then use that URL in Power Automate as it pulls through with the other Page Properties and this works fine for the Outlook App.

Paul Gibson - can you share your flow for your newsletter email? I used the below instructions, but it only has one article per email: https://collab365.com/using-flow-sharepoint-news-notifications/

Thanks!

Hi @mason007!  hope you doing great... I have managed to resolve the issue. Would be pleased to help if you can more elaborate on the issue you are facing.

Hi Rafia2500! I wanted to have more than one article in the email - so the top 5 news post in a single email. I followed the above link (https://collab365.com/using-flow-sharepoint-news-notifications/) which worked for one news post but not more than that. So I wanted the email to look like below, where I can specify how many articles.

In the very first question, it seemed that Paul Gibson had already had this set up but it wasn't showing images on Outlook desktop/client version. I want to automate the news posts (weekly) in an email to users, with a link to all the news. Does this help with what I'm asking? Thank you!

hi @mason007  I have shared the steps in my flow.. it will send email to the selected recipient the output of the last HTML  action...  you can add CSS of your choice. Hope this will help you to resolve the issue. I am using a condition + an saved image in my library because in my case I want that if the post do not have the image use my default image you can skip this image initialization + the condition... perhaps use the other steps in the condition to get the post + images.

If you still have any questions feel free to ask.

if this helps you kindly mark it as the solution.

Thank you so much Rafia2500! I will work with this and post back results or issues I encounter. Appreciate this!

Rafia2500, I couldn't follow your flow as not all the steps were visible. I could follow this one step by step and got it to work:

https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/General-Power-Automate/Weekly-sharepoint-news-digest/td-p/197467

But still don't know how to get the images into the email.

mason007_0-1689546186581.png

Is it possible for you to show your steps similar to the way it is in the above link? Or how I can incorporate the image into the one I have working now? Thanks again!

Thanks so  much! I was able to use your first link and followed the video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z32ng9_bCAY. I have it working!
