the type of this argument does not match the expected type record found type text

Hello,

I am receiving this error when attempting to patch data to my SharePoint list:

the type of this argument does not match the expected type. record found type text

This is my patch statement which is being run on the 'OnSuccess' property of my SharePoint list form.

ForAll(colTopicClaim, If(!IsBlank(Topic & Claim), Patch(colTopicClaimSP, Defaults(colTopicClaimSP), {spTopic: Topic, spClaim: Claim, spTopicRAGStatus: TopicRAGStatus, DocDataID: DocData_form.LastSubmit.ID}

The bit it doesn't seem to like is spTopic: Topic

sudosaurus_0-1693412813219.png

If I remove spTopic: Topic then the patch statement validates!

sudosaurus_1-1693412862922.png

For the record, the Topic value in my colTopicClaim collection, derives from a dropdown menu - however spTopic in my SharePoint list is a single line of text column.

The data is being stored correctly in my collection, so I don't know what I need to do to overcome this error??

sudosaurus_2-1693413025149.png

How can I patch this to my text column in my SharePoint list?

You will have to adjust all code references where you patch the collection Topic column (see Collect after the Patch). If it keeps throwing errors, we can keep the Topic_dd.Selected.Value and use the following instead:

//(SharePoint patch)
//Change
spTopic: Topic
//to
spTopic: With({wTopic: LookUp(Topics As Inner, Inner.Topic = Topic)}, {Id: wTopic.ID, Value: wTopic.Topic})

Given the fact that the Topic column is not unique and we simply patch the first record that matches this condition, I have to mention that there is no benefit to using a LookUp column. It only makes patching more complex in this case - it may be beneficial to use a Text column instead and use you initial setup.

@sudosaurus perfect! 😊

I may be missing some context, but it looks as if the create collection record code below will (1 - Patch) update the selected record within the collection and (2 - collect) add a new row to the collection. The issue may be caused by that code.

//Update current record
Patch(
    colTopicClaim,
    ThisItem,
    {Topic: Topic_dd.Selected.Value, TopicRAGStatus: TopicRAGStatus_dd.Selected.Result, Claim: Claim_TextInput.Text}
);
//And create a duplicate
Collect(
    colTopicClaim,
    {Topic: Topic_dd.Selected.Value, TopicRAGStatus: TopicRAGStatus_dd.Selected.Result, Claim: Claim_TextInput.Text}
)

@sudosaurus, please excuse the multiple edits. I failed to read the whole question first. It looks like somewhere else in your app you have used ClearCollect to set the "spTopic" column in the "colTopicClaimSP" collection to a record data type. It might look something like "ClearCollect(colTopicClaimSP, {spTopic: dropdown_Topic.Selected}". If that is the case, then change "dropdown_Topic.Selected" to "dropdown_Topic.Selected.Value").

Hi @sudosaurus,

Could it be possible that spTopic is a Choice field and not a text field within SP - since it expects an input of type record? Please try:

spTopic: {Value: Topic}

Additionally, you may have to double check the IsBlank() statement since it may not function as expected. See @NateF's answer, your current logic will return true once one of the 2 fields is not empty.

If this solves your question, would you be so kind as to accept it as a solution & give it a thumbs up.

Thanks!

@NateF

So everything is patching now except for spTopic which is blank.

sudosaurus_0-1693414152980.png

I am using this patch statement now:

ForAll(colTopicClaim, Patch(colTopicClaimSP, Defaults(colTopicClaimSP), {spClaim: Claim, spTopicRAGStatus: TopicRAGStatus, DocDataID: DocData_form.LastSubmit.ID}))

Man, it's been a long day! Yes you're right except it's a lookup column from another list - how would I patch to this column type?

Hi @sudosaurus,

Ah ok that explains the record type prompt! 😊 The easiest way would be to use a dropdown with Choices(colTopicClaim.spTopic) and using DropdownName.Selected as the column value. (e.g. the default Items property when using a LookUp dropdown in a Form)

That may not be possible with your current setup. Another way would be to create the expected LookUp record column mapping ourselves. We will need the ID & Title property of the saved topic and map these to the Id and Value columns:

//You can save this to a variable and then use that variable as the input of your patch function
//You can also use the record below within the Patch function itself
{
    Id: //saved spTopic ID field here
    Value: //saved spTopic TITLE field here
}

I hope this helps!

@LaurensM

I'm not utilising the Title field on the colTopicClaimSP SharePoint list.

In terms of the Id of the saved spTopic ID field - do you mean the SharePoint list ID number or does the actual field have an ID?

@sudosaurus,

I just noticed that the displayed column for the LookUp record is the Topic column, not Title - this will be the column that you have to map to the Value column. The Topic and ID (default sp ID field)  fields refer to the columns of the Topic that you would like to link to that row:

{
    Id: TopicRecord.ID,
    Value: TopicRecord.Topic
}

Change TopicRecord to a correct reference to the topic that you would like to link to that row.

I hope this helps!

@LaurensM
So, this is the list that the data is being patched to:

sudosaurus_0-1693420341246.png

and this is the list that the spTopic is getting the Topic name from:

sudosaurus_1-1693420452729.png

I'm just wondering which I need the following for?

    Id: TopicRecord.ID
    Value: TopicRecord.Topic

and how I incorporate that into my existing OnSuccess patch code?

@sudosaurus

Instead of patching a Text value to that column we will need to patch the structure provided in my previous comment. You will need the Topic text value and the ID of the Topic you are trying to link to your colTopicClaimSP.

In you Patch statement, the change will look as follows:

... Patch code ...
{
    spTopic: {Id: TopicRecord.ID, Value: TopicRecord.Topic},
    spClaim: Claim,
    ... Other fields ...

Instead of only saving a Topic text value in your collection, you will need to make sure you save the Topic record so you can reference the ID and Topic column during the patch.
