.net SDK for Dataverse - Dataverse ServiceClient - Now available now GA.

Folks, 

As many of you know, we have an existing .net full framework SDK ( CrmServiceClient and Microsoft.Xrm.Sdk ) that we provide for folks to develop client applications that communicate with Dataverse.  This SDK has existed for a long period and arose from the Dynamics 365 aspects of our platform.  The CrmServiceClient and underlying apsects where built to work with and are supported on the Microsoft .net framework, versions 4.6.2 - 4.8. 

We have continued to support this SDK over the last many years over many versions of our platform.   

Dataverse ServiceClient

As some of you know, we have been developing an updated version of this SDK Client called the Dataverse ServiceClient.  After a great deal of internal testing, internal use, public feedback and refinement We have shipped the 1.0 of the Dataverse Service Client.

We are continuing to invest in this area and will improve this over time for developers.  

This client is intended to be utilized as part of .net framework and .net core applications. To-date we have shipped and are aware of applications utilizing this client running on Linux .net core apps, windows apps, Asp.net, Asp.net Core, Blazor server, Azure Functions, App Services and traditional command line utilities used cross platform.

The code for this client is published via GitHub here PowerPlatform-DataverseServiceClient and we encourage folks with issues or questions to report them there.

Managed Identities can be used now, Though you do need to provide the token provider code to work with the managed identity type yourself . 

We have been thinking about adding a managed identity type for native authentication support but have not yet done it.

I agree with you about the old relic 4.6.2, but about serialization, the new Text.Json shoud be supported natively now

I know it's been asked in the thread a year ago, but just wondering if there is any roadmap update with respect to .NET (core/standard/6/7/etc) support for plugins that go beyond the .NET Framework. Yes, we can call out to things like Azure Functions from our plugins to get around this, but plugins start to feel more obsolete as new things come out that don't target .NET Framework - especially with the latest ability to include dependent assemblies. For example I was interested in trying out some Semantic Kernel operations directly from a plugin until I realized SK has no .NET Framework support.

@kheimanhso ,  Thanks for reaching out on this subject.   
I have generally been silent about this as we do not have anything solid to share as to timing, features and such.   
That remains the case currently. 

However,
As this comes up quite a lot, I will say that we are actively working on supporting .net core-based plugins for the platform, along with several other enhancements to support it.   When you do see us make an announcement, it will be the culmination of a large amount of work over several waves, internal testing, first party use, and tool updates that have been shipped.  

You can see some of this happening in the updates to PowerPlatform CLI, Dataverse ServiceClient, Plugin Registration Tools and others.  

I look forward to being able to really talk this area in the future as there is a lot of really neat capabilities we want to bring to the 'pro-dev' space here.

I REALLY appreciate you breaking radio silence on this. Been a fan of your team for several years now and I hoped/suspected there may have been some internal movement on this front based on the products you mentioned (especially the .NET SDKs). Will try to maintain patience!

Hi @MattB-MSFT - are you able to share any more news on plugins supporting .NET core? We're in a predicament whereby we're about to invest a lot of time developing against .NET Framework for our Dynamics 365 solutions, however it would be much more advantageous for us to build against .NET 7.0.

Hi @MattB-MSFT, as .NET 8 reached general availability in November 2023, the support for .NET 6 ends within a year. Is there a release date or any plans for Microsoft.PowerPlatform.Dataverse.Client NuGet package that targets .NET 8? Or is the current version already fully compatible with .NET 8?

The current version works well with .net 7 and 8.. 

.net 8 released on the 14th of November 2023 (about 2 weeks ago at the time of this writing :)) 

We will decide if we are going to ship a target for .net 8 in q1 of 2024.  
As we did with .netcore 3.1 , we are not likely to remove the .net 6 target for a number of months post net 6.x's retirement.
