Is your SQL on prem or in Azure? Looking at the screenshot, it looks to be on premise which means you won't be able to use SQL query via the data gateway.
You can look into calling a stored proc that is on the server you have created the connection for and see if you can query your linked server that way? I know the stored proc executed via SSMS will execute the query successfully against the linked server.

Can you confirm that you are trying to connect to your SQL server which is then linked to another SQL server and that your end goal is to execute a query on the linked server?
Are the SQL servers on premise / in a private network or publicly available in Azure?
