Expression for Email

I'm trying to create a flow where if I receive an email from a specific 'no reply' email address, where the body of the email contains the actual email address that I want to send an automate reply to, that I can use an expression to represent that email address in the To field of the 'If yes' scenario.

Is there such an expression in Power Automate that represents an email address in the body of an email?

Hi,

The only hard part of this would be to pull information from the email itself. You can pull the string data of the email contents fairly easy. The hard part is having the flow intelligently figure out what the exact email part in the massive string. It looks like a few people have been successful in this in the articles below so I would start there.

Alex

Hello, I'm still having issues with the last step of the flow....it's not liking the data that's in the To field. I followed part of the instructions from the 1st link you sent me -- the relevant part -- but it's still not working.

This is what the body of the system-generated email looks like, and I want to extract the email address listed:

Capture.JPG

So I created the following flow based on the 1st link you sent:

Capture2.JPG

Capture3.JPG

I wasn't sure exactly how to determine the number of spaces from the word 'Email' to the beginning of the email address, so I just counted 23.  But in plain text, the number of spaces looks to be only 7, so I'm still unsure about that too.

Every time I test the flow, it fails.  Here are the details, which of course I don't understand.  But apparently it has something to do with the data in the To field:

Capture4.JPG

Any insight you can provide??  It would be very much appreciated!

If you can provide a sample of the output that "HTML To Text" provides. I will build you an expression that gets the email. Feel free to use fictional data, but don't modify the structure of what is output.

For some reason, it's not allowing me to paste the text in this message field.....

Hi @Anonymous,

just a general suggestion:

1) Find Email: and save its index

2) find the first end of string (CRLF) after  1)

3) find  "@" between 1) and 2)

4) find the first space before 3)

5) find the first space after 3). If no spaces there use 2) as end of address

Done.

This expression does what you want:

trim
(
	split
	(
		substring
		(
		  outputs('HTML_to_text')['body'],
		  add(indexOf(outputs('Html_to_text')?['body'], 'Email:'),6)
		),
	   decodeUriComponent('%0A')
	)[0]
)

Does it make sense or would you like me to explain so you can comprehend it better in the future?

Yes, that's the system email that I receive.  That's how it looks in plain text; here's a screen shot of how it actually looks when it comes in:

Did the expression work for you?

ok awesome, so do I need to put this entire expression in the "Compose 2" section of the flow?

Anonymous

Do I still need a "Compose 3" section?

This is what I had in the Compose 3 section:

substring(body('Html_to_text'),outputs('Compose_2'),sub(outputs('Compose'),outputs('Compose_2')))

The test failed with this expression, by the way

You would only need 1 compose action with the function that @Paulie78 provided, it would come after the HTML to text action. You should then be able to use the output of that single compose action to populate the 'To' field in your email action.

If the flow is failing, can you show/tell us what the output is of that compose action? Ie. what is the flow putting in the 'To' field now?

It failed because I think the expression you created is causing the word "booking" to be included in the actual email address.  See below:

It does not do that for me, but I suspect the reason is that the text you pasted as the output from the HTML to text action that I copied, is not an exact copy, because of how this forum software deals with new lines etc. Can you take the output from HTML to text again and put it on pastebin.com and I will copy it from there and retest.

Hello, I went ahead and pasted the output to pastebin.com. Thanks

It would be difficult to guess the paste link, would you provide?
